Minho was panting next to Newt on the stone floor trying to catch his breath.
"She... we got separated at the maze and... uh... she, I tried to guide her through, so we could find each other but..."
"But what?" Alby pushed.
"She saw a griever!" Minho said staring deeply into the first in command's eyes. Clint and Jeff both arrived at the scene with a litter in hands.
"Shit..." Jeff exclaimed under his breath after placing it on the ground and analyzing the scene. Alby and the runner stopped talking so they could watch the two med-jacks take the hurt girl's body from Newt's arms and place it onto the litter. Newt kept his eyes glued on y/n's face as her limp figure was lifted from the floor, holding her hand as if she would squeeze back by any second. He knew that was not the case.
Now it was already dark, and the Doors had long been closed. Clint and Jeff took her carefully to the aid room, a place in the homestead that served as a hospital. Before Minho could step foot into the room, Newt grabbed him by the collar and shoved him on the wall. Alby had to stop Gally from barging in, but still stood alert.
"You! You were supposed to protect her! You... you didn't protect her..." The brunette never got the chance to react to the attack since Newt let go of him almost immediately.
He was ashamed. Of course it wasn't Minho's fault. He sighed and sat down covering his face with his hands. He usually didn't let himself lose control like that. Minho crouched next to him and hesitantly placed a hand on his shoulder.
"I tried, Newt."
"What happened?" The blonde now looked at his friend.
He exhaled sharply before starting, giving a look to Alby so that he also heard the story.
"We were running like usual, I was ahead because she was always stopping to look around, and I didn't mind. Then a blow of wind came and the walls started closing between us and we were too far apart. She started following my voice and I was guiding her through so she wouldn't panic, and it was working. Until she... until she saw the griever."
Alby stared at the runner trying to digest what he just heard. Newt didn't even react, it was like he was numb.
"So she got stung?" Gally intervened.
"No! No, she escaped. She ran and she screamed but she got stuck on a dead end. I thought that was it. But y/n didn't stop. She climbed her way to the other side of the wall. I could see her, I mean, she was right there. She would climb down and we would come back. But... she slipped and... there was nothing I could've done, Newt, I'm so sorry."
There was a moment of silence while everyone let it all sink in.
"I can't believe she saw a griever." Alby was the one to talk. "She must've been so scared."
"She is crazy, that girl. Brave, but crazy." Gally added with a small grin. Minho and Newt chuckled. As soon as Newt heard the sound of the door opening he got up to face Clint, who came out with a stern look on his face.
"You can come in now if you want."
They let Newt go first, then the others joined him. They all stood there watching y/n's maimed frame in awe as her chest rose with each shallow breath. Both of her arms and one leg were wrapped in gauze and had a piece of wood to stabilize it. There were bandages all over her body and bruises covered almost all the surface of her once soft skin. It was a really horrible thing to look at. And there she was. Just lying there as if she were sound asleep.
Newt took a step closer to the stretcher, reaching out to hold her hand. He didn't understand how someone so full of life could look so lifeless. He brought his free hand up to her face, carefully tracing the cut along her cheekbone with his finger.
"How is she?" Minho asked also stepping closer to look at the girl.
"She is stable for now. But she is hurt pretty bad, Minho, I have no idea how she  is still alive. She broke her wrist, her left arm in two places and her right elbow was dislocated. The right knee was also dislocated and the ankle fractured pretty bad. She has deep cuts on her arms and face and bruises all over." Clint stated with seriousness. Newt covered his mouth in distress, trying to hold the tears that formed at the sight. That was just too much.
"But do you think she'll be okay?" Alby asked.
"Look... you know as much as I do.  I couldn't tell if she's going to recover. You see, falling from that high... she could have internal bleeding. And I don't think that anything in the box can help her if that is the case. We did the best we could to stabilize her but only time will tell now. The only thing we can do is wait. I'm sorry."
"We know. You did good." The first in command assured, tapping gently at Clint and Jeff's shoulders as they left.
It was hard to move on now. They were all so worried. But really there was nothing that they could do to help y/n.
So they said goodnight and left. First Minho, then Gally.
"You can stay here if you want. I can handle the work tomorrow, you take care of her. Good night." He flashed Alby a thankful look and watched as he went away, leaving him in the room.
"Please wake up, y/n. Please, love."  He spent the rest of the night like that. Holding her hand. And there he slept, just like the day before, with his girl.
