She woke up dizzy, alone in the "room". Her face and stomach hurt, but nothing too serious. She stretched and by little didn't fall off the ladder when going down. She went around the household, and basically everyone was already up. She saw Alby coming her way, a serious expression on his face. She thought about running but it would be too weird.
When the man got to her, he stared at her bloody cheek, leading her to the washroom, without saying a word. She just followed him and threw hot water at her face, cleaning the blood. It was just a little cut from when Gally punched her.. Her lips were chapped so the hitting opened a little gash on it. But except for that and a few bruises it was all.
"What were you thinking Greenie? Fighting Gally like that? You could've hurt yourself."
"But i almost won! It was a close one and..." she said, arguing like a little child, pouting when he interrupted her.
"Look, you're new, you must be scared, I get it. But you can't go around picking fights with these boys. They've been here longer, they have more experience."
The two were now walking towards the cookhouse again.
"I know but he was pissing me off and..."
"No! This may be hard, but these boys... they're your brothers now. You cannot fight them, you save it to fight against them. Whoever they are."
Alby pointed to the maze, and the girl settled.
She then saw Gally limping and bruised, looking pissed at her. She smiled, glad she had left an impression. Alby was not happy with that at all.
"You're going to apologize. Go." He said, sounding like an angry dad. Before she could argue, Alby sent her a death stare so she just went to talk to the boy.
"Hello there. I'm sorry for making your face look like that." She said pointing to his purple eye. He scoffed slightly, of course he knew she didn't mean it.
"It's okay, it wasn't that bad. And me choking you, that wasn't cool... for you." He said that last part barely in a whisper. She scoffed, giving him a smug look.
" 'Wasn't that bad'? I kicked your ass."
"But I won didn't I?!" He said smirking now too.
"Only cause i hit my head against the ground. That was cheating."
"Yeah, my bad. I'm not really good with people."
"I've noticed..." she laughed and he smiled.
"So... we're cool?" He asked, trying not to sound desperate about the answer.
"Yeah. I think we're cool."
"Good. And you were harder to beat then those guys out there. See ya 'shovel girl'."
"So I'm stronger than them?! Thanks! Couldn't agree more!"
"Bye!" He screamed as he walked away leaving her alone. She gave a thumbs up to Alby, who grinned and went into the map room. She couldn't go in there yet.
"I see you and Gally worked things out. How're you feeling, love?!"
Newt came from behind her.
"Yeah. Maybe he's not a... what you call it, a 'trank'? A 'chank'?" Newt laughed at the girl, who looked down smiling, trying to hide her blush.
"A shank?" He corrected.
"Yeah, that. What is a shank anyway?"
"It's like 'idiot' or 'stupid'. I think it's some sort of a glade slang, it's like that since I came in through the box."
"How long has it been since... you're here?" She asked curious, while his smile slowly faded.
"It's been around three years. I was the second Glader, came after Alby. We basically built all this together."
Her eyes filled with tears. Three years. That is a lot of time.
She placed her hand awkwardly on the blonde's shoulder.
"That must've been awful, Newt..."
"Yeah. But it was worse for Alby, tho. He's the one who had to spend a whole month alone out here."
"Oh gosh! And here I was complaining like an idiot, I'm so sorry." She faltered but got interrupted.
"Hey, don't you worry, love, the time we spent here doesn't make any of this any less bad for you. We all went through the same thing. And you can complain to me about whatever you want."
"Well, there's nothing I'd complain about right now." She glances at him and throws him a smirk.
Trying to hide the blush that covered his face, he smiled with the corner of his soft lips. She stared at it for way too long, when he tapped her hand on his shoulder and stroke it slightly, bringing her out of her trance.
On that moment, the doors of the maze
opened, and they both turned to stare at it.
"I would like to be a runner." She thought out loud.
Newt's eyes widened and he turned to look at the girl. He nervously laughed, assuming that she was being sarcastic.
"Ha ha, funny."
"What? I'm serious." She states cluelessly and he returns to seriousness.
"You can't be a runner." He prompts, maintaining eye contact. She looked confused.
"Wha... why?"
"It's really dangerous."
"Yeah, so?! Don't you think I could do it?" She was now actually offended.
"I do, it's just, I don't understand why you would want to be a runner, haven't you listened to anything I told you?"
"Because I want to help get outta here, Newt. Is it that bad that I want to try?"
"No... I mean, yes! It's no good out there, Greenie, you wasn't supposed to even know about the Maze, let alone go in it."
"I can make my own deductions, you know."
She scoffed and left, going to the runner's keeper, being followed by the blonde glader.
