Eragon slid under the gate just before it clamped shut.

"You're lucky son" a guard patrolling said, Eragon nodded in reply. He rushed over to Jeod's house (getting lost twice) and knocked on the door. The door creaked open and he was greeted with an angry Brom.

"Where have you been?!" Brom demanded after bringing him inside then taking him to the study

"I came across something unexpected, I thought about it on the walk back and then it got late quickly" Eragon briefly explained, hoping he would not receive a lecture.

"What did you come across?" Brom asked suspiciously

"When I found Saphira there was a girl with her" Eragon said, he paused so Brom could process the information, with a wave of Brom's hand he signalled Eragon to continue "Her name was Ruth, she looked human, red hair, one green eye and one blue eye, pale skin. Saphira confirmed she had no evil intention, she had been hiding outside of Teirm from a group of slavers. She was hunting when she found Saphira. That's all I found out, Saphira said Ruth's statements proved true"

"Very well, what do you suggest is the best option to take forth?" Brom asked

"I am not sure what is wise"

"Do you want to adopt her for this mission?"

"I am not sure" Eragon replied truthfully, she seemed nice but he didn't know her very well. "When I return to Saphira tomorrow, would you like to accompany me? If Ruth is still there we can question her and see if she's worthy for the mission" he suggested

"We shall do that, for now, get some rest we will continue your reading lessons the coming day"

Eragon walked to his room and thought of how useful it would be to acquire another person for the mission. He soon drifted off to sleep thinking of Saphira and endless scrolls.

-The Next Night-

Ruth had spent the whole day with Saphira, they hunted, found a stream, talked, and shared experiences. Ruth learnt many things from Saphira ; Eragon, farming (something she wouldn't except a dragon to know), their travels, a man named Brom, Eragon's cousin and uncle and other things she deemed relevant to tell her. Saphira also claimed it was nice to not be lonely for the day, since she had been for a few days. Ruth told Saphira about her family, life, dealings with the slavers and her independent life from then on. They went along the cliff and got in a comfortable position to start watching the sunset. Ruth was sitting under Saphira's large, beautiful wing while leaning on the side of her scaly chest. Saphira was perched sitting like a cat, she hummed pleasantly in her chest. The deep vibrations stretching through Ruth's skin, causing goosebumps to arise.

As she had the other day she saw a figure leave Teirm but this time there was another, Ruth pointed this out and Saphira guessed it was Brom.

Brom is here with Eragon but he does not want to climb up here so I'm going to pick him up. Stay here, Eragon is nearly at the top so you should not be lonely Saphira said

Okay

Behind her she heard a grunt, looking back Eragon rolled onto the grass, panting.

"Hello, I brought my companion, Brom, he would like to see if you are worthy to join our mission" he said, sitting up. He ruffled his hair making it look like a broken bird's nest.

"Mission?" Ruth asked confused, Saphira had mentioned lots of travelling but despite Ruth's constant pestering she never informed her of the goal or the main objective.

"Saphira didn't tell you?"

"No"

Eragon opened his mouth to say something then closed it. He thought over it for a second before a voice interrupted him

"Eragon?" an old man said behind us, we both turned around to see what Ruth guessed to be Brom.

"Ruth, this is Brom. Brom, this is Ruth" Eragon said, Ruth stood so she was about 4 feet from the man.

"I would like to question you about a few subjects then me and Eragon will decide if you're worthy enough to be on our journey." Brom said

"Okay, well let's get started then" Ruth replied, she definitely wanted to be on this journey, she bonded well with Saphira and she had been lonely for 2 years.

Brom questioned her on her craftsmanship skills (she can make saddles for horses), fighting skills (she is good with a bow and arrow, well enough at swordsmanship to not die and amazing javelin throwing), if she can read (she can to Eragon's disappointment), if she can write (she also can). Many other things were asked and in conclusion she was worthy of travelling among them.

"We must return to Teirm before the gates close, soon we will be leaving. Can you wait that long?" Brom asked, with a stern gaze

"Aye I can, I won't be lonely anyway" Ruth said, gesturing to Saphira who nodded.
