Ruth missed all of what they said, so by the time she had painfully eaten her broth she asked Eragon what they had discussed.
"Murtagh has joined us until we've found a safe place to stay or the Ra'zac leave us alone" Eragon said
"Can we trust him?" she said softly, trying not to be heard from Murtagh
"I'm not sure but if he proves dangerous Saphira can also chase him away" he replied
"I suppose" she turned to see Murtagh creating a litter, gesturing toward it "Is that for Brom?"
"Yes" he said
"Ah" she nodded
Once Murtagh had finished he mounted his grey war horse.
"Eragon, shall we still ride on Cadoc together?" she asked "Or may I take Snowfire?" she took Snowfire's reins whilst awaiting his response
"You may take Snowfire, I doubt either of us could manage being on the same horse" he said,
Ruth nodded in reply
"You two shared a horse?" Murtagh asked, an eyebrow raised
"Yes, though it wasn't enjoyable for either of us" Ruth snapped before Murtagh made any accusations
Ruth and Eragon awkwardly mounted their horses and travelled toward Saphira, the wan light that rippled across the land encouraged by the oxbow moon would make it easier for the Ra'zac to hunt them but easier for them to navigate.
Ruth could tell from Eragon's face that he wanted to ask more questions but he stayed silent.
Once they found Saphira, Eragon exchanged a few words he then announced to everyone
"There's a cave nearby, Saphira will lead us"
After an hour they finally reached the cave. The cavern was a good hundred feet long and more than twenty feet wide, yet it had a small entrance protecting them from poor weather and prying eyes. Darkness clung to the walls of the far side of the cavern, like a matt of thick wool.
"Impressive" said Murtagh "I'll gather wood for a fire"
Eragon hurried to Brom while Ruth's body continued to throb. It reminded her of the pains she used to experience in the past, the pains her father inflicted, the pains she buried deep among herself and the pains she constantly tried to avoid.
Ruth shook her head, dismissing herself from thinking about it. She hobbled beside Eragon who was clasping his hand over Brom's limp one.
Eragon sighed "We should go to the fire"
Ruth could tell he was sad, she guessed Brom and him were close before she knew either of them. Sympathetically, she forced herself a smile, Eragon replied in kind.
They all sat in silence, eating quietly. They tried to give Brom water but the old man would not have any. Stymied, they rolled out their bedrolls and slept.
