TW: mentions of mental and emotional abuse

I sat around anxiously all afternoon waiting for Sam to arrive. I knew Josh and Ronnie knew something was up but I refused to tell them. Every time they'd ask I'd just said "What? Oh, nothing." I don't think they bought it but I didn't have the energy to dwell on it. Around noon I took a shower and picked out my outfit for the night.

Nothing too major, just a white tanktop and blue jeans.

I checked my phone for the first time since the phone call this morning; after I got dressed and did my makeup; seeing three messages from Sam

I checked my phone for the first time since the phone call this morning; after I got dressed and did my makeup; seeing three messages from Sam.

Text Message from Sam:
Hey I just landed in Detroit. Will be a little while before I get there. You still didn't send me the address?

Text Message from Sam:
I texted Josh because I know he's with you. He sent the address.

Text Message from Sam:
About half an hour out now. Kind of nervous. Kind of excited. Are you even getting these?

I giggled at the last one and typed out my reply.

Text Message to Sam:
Yes I'm getting these loser. Oh great now I have to deal with Josh's mouth, thank you for that

I laugh again knowing he likely had no idea what I meant. I braced myself and opened my bathroom door. Thankfully Josh wasn't in my room ready to brag. I clutched my phone in my hand as I descended the stairs one by one.

I seen Ronnie first; she was lying on the couch watching tv. She barely looked up when I walked into the room. I carefully entered the kitchen and of course, there he is, standing at the island with his arms crossed. His brown eyes bore into mine until his stern face broke out into a smile.

"Well, if it isn't little miss movin' on. So proud of you, little Red.." he grins and wobbles over to hug me.

"Relax. I'm just hearing him out. We're not getting married.." I roll my eyes and pull away from him.

"Not yet!" Ronnie shouts from the other room, "mark my words."

"Shut up, Vonnie!" I stamped my foot and I'm brought back to being sixteen and the Kiszka family tradition of picking on Sam and I.

"Can't wait to say I told you so!"

I huffed and approached the door, wanting to escape these vultures. Picking me apart as I'm already empty. When I opened the front door I nearly jumped out of my skin. Sam was already here and he was turned around scoping out the scenery. He heard the door open and turned to me. His eyes widened in surprise at the sight.

"How did you know I was here?" he asked.

"I-I didn't," I shook my head, "I was trying to get away from your sister.." I admit and feel a small smile tugging at my lips just from being in his presence.
