Gally was the first face Emma saw when she entered the Glade, but Newt was her first friend. The first person she ever trusted. Now, he was gone.

Emma lost him. Why hadn't she done more? She should have forced Newt to stay with Gally and get the serum. She shouldn't have left Thomas alone with Newt.

What was she thinking?

Newt is dead, and he isn't coming back. She checked this time.

They had to leave him behind in the city that was burning to the ground. Emma left him behind to rot like she did with Chuck. With Winston. With so many others. How many more people would she lose?

As they raced back to the berg, Gally never let go of her arm. Brenda, Minho, and Frypan were ahead of them. Nobody said a word the entire time. All of them processing the loss of their dear friend. Newt was a beacon of light in the darkness. He was the soul of their group. The glue that held them together.

Now, he was gone.

And Emma's heart was broken because of it.

They jogged up the stairs. The berg hadn't left its spot. "Brenda," Jorge breathed in relief, spotting them first. She ran up the ramp to meet him inside.

Brenda embraced him in a much-needed hug. Newt was dead. Thomas was missing. The city was burning. Everything was falling apart.

The group followed after her, now safely inside the hovercraft. Vince approached them, patting Frypan on the back. That was when he noticed Emma. "Shit, Emma." The older man rushed toward her. "What happened?" He was referring to the cut on her face. Something she had long since forgotten about.

Emma said nothing. She just stared numbly at the wall. Newt was dead. Thomas was gone. She felt like she was gone too. Jorge pulled back from Brenda. "Where's Newt? Thomas?"

"Thomas went back," Frypan explained. Emma stood beside Gally, who finally let go of her arm. All of the immunes they had rescued were there. They were safe.

"What about Newt?" The question came from Vince. Emma moved her head to meet his gaze, and her expression told him all he needed to know. The genuine grief in her eyes told him that Newt was gone. "Shit." Vince placed a hand on Emma's shoulder, squeezing gently. It was all he could do.

Jorge was shocked. He turned toward the others, wanting confirmation. "Yeah," Brenda whispered. That was all he needed. Newt hadn't made it.

Newt is dead.

How was that possible? Brenda had the serum in her hand. They were so close but not fast enough. He didn't make it. "We need to go back for Thomas."

Vince and Jorge shared a look, one that Emma couldn't decipher. "Okay," Vince agreed. "Let's get him."

Jorge rushed to the front, taking a seat. The others followed after him. "Everyone on board?" He closed the hatch without waiting for a response.

"Let's go."

"Go," Brenda said, hitting the side of his chair. "Hurry, come on. We have to go." They needed to find Thomas before it was too late.

The berg lifted into the air. Emma placed her hand on the wall, keeping herself steady. The city was burning all around them. They had to find Thomas before it was too late. Before he was gone too. "Where is he?"

"We think he went back to the central building," Minho explained beside Jorge, staring out the window as they soared through the sky. "Where I was."

"That's where Teresa is," Emma added. "He went back." He went back to her. It was the only explanation as to where he was. Why he left, to begin with. Teresa was the only thing left in the city that he cared about. She called for him, asked him to come back, and he would have. It didn't matter that Teresa was still with WICKED.
