Paintbrush POV

I walked on the campus, admiring the beautiful green trees that would soon turn orange. There was so many buildings. Me and Marshmallow split up when we got here to look around the place. I eventually found the art building, which was really beautiful by the way. Seriously, whoever built this deserves an award. There was statues of random people. I think I saw George Washington.

Whatever, now is the time. I'm finally ready to meet my roommates. Each room gets 4 people or less. The minimum is 2, which means I'll be getting at least one roommate no matter what. I stepped inside the dorm building, my hands shaking. My room was 34. Which means it's on the 3rd floor. I walked up the stairs, sweating. I was extremely nervous. I hope none of them are homophobic.

Maybe I'll get lucky and Marshmallow is my roommate. Probably not though. She went inside the other dorm building when we split up. I walked up the last stair case and saw my dorm. Room 34. I held the key in my shaking hand. I slowly inserted the key and turned it. I slowly opened the door to see a girl- boy- I don't know.. a person with red hair and square glasses, sitting on the couch eating ramen noodles from the fucking box. What a psycho. They were watching a show on the TV.

"Um.. hello?" They looked up at me. "Oh hi! You must me our last roommate." Did I seriously get here last? Gosh Paintbrush, you're such a reck. They stood up but it barely made a difference. "God you're short." I blurted out by mistake. "Gee, thanks." "Fan? Is that our new roommate?" Someone called out from the kitchen. "Yeah, and I must say, he is pretty rude!" I cringed at their use of the wrong pronoun. They extended their arm. "Anyways, I'm Fan. I go by she/he pronouns."

Oh. I didn't know people could go by more than one pronoun. Everyone in my town just went with what they were born as. "Oh, I'm Paintbrush.. I go by they/them?" I shook her hand. The person that was in the kitchen stepped out. "I'm Test Tube. You can call me by any pronouns but I mostly prefer she/they/xe." I waved slightly to her. "Where's our other roommate?" I asked.

"She's in the park right now," Test Tube explained, sitting down on the couch. "She really wanted to play with her friend but before we could ask her who it was.. she just ran off." "That girl is weird. But the good type of weird!" Fan laughed as he sat down, "She asked me if I had any sticks to chew on." "That sounds like someone I know." I said, sitting down next to them on the couch.

"I saw her again on the train today. She brought a whole crab on the train!" "Hey, our roommate had a crab too-" The door bursted open. "I found Baxter! The little fella got lost when we were playing!" I sighed. "You have got to be kidding me." Lightbulb noticed me and gasped. "Oh! Hi Painty!" "What did you just call me?" "Nothing!"

It took a while to figure out the room situation. (it took the whole day, mostly because Lightbulb and Fan really wanted the room with the big window) but we finally decided. Lightbulb got the room with the big window in the end. I didn't really care which room I got, as long as it wasn't dirty. And Test Tube just wanted a room that was nearest to the door so she could sneak out and study in the library without waking anyone up. I don't even know why were doing this now. I mean, we're only here for a week.

I fell on my bed and stared at the ceiling. I should unpack. It was around 9pm after all. What do people even do at 9pm? I sat up and sighed. I too tired to unpack, maybe tomorrow. I'm kinda hungry though. I stood up and went to go get a snack from the kitchen. As soon as I left my room I saw Lightbulb climbing out of the window.

"Hi Painty!" "Don't call me that- What are you even doing?!" Lightbulb went fully out of the window, just hanging on the ledge. "Woah, woah, woah. Be careful." I rushed over to the window and opened it fully. "Lightbulb, if you're leaving, at least use the door." "But they said at students must be inside their rooms by 8:30 so this is so I don't get caught!"

I shook my head. "Hey, Painty? Can you get me my blanket?" I sighed. I walked to her room a returned to the living room with her blanket. "Here." She tied it around her and the window. The realization hit me like a bullet. "Lightbulb, I swear to god if you jump down from here-" She jumped and landed in the garage can below. She untied the blanket from around her and smiled back at me. "C'mon Painty! Come with me!" I sighed. I am really about to do this?

I went outside of the window and grabbed on the blanket. I climbed down it, trying hard not to lose my balance. I reached the end and jumped to the ground. "You're so boring, Painty! You shoulda jumped." I rolled my eyes at her silly comment. She grabbed my hand and started running away from the dorm building. I don't know what it was but something about her holding my hand felt.. weird. It was like there was.. bugs in my stomach? It's pretty hard to explain. It was probably nothing.

Anyway, we get to the entrance of the campus and the gate was closed. "Ah rats!" Lightbulb pouted. I shrugged. "Guess we gonna head back-" "Let's jump the gate!" Lightbulb exclaimed. "Wh- NO! Lightbulb, we can't just jump gates! Are you crazy?!" She giggled as she climbed the gate. "Maybe a little!" She reached the stop and jumped off. "Your turn Painty!" I groaned. "Lightbulb, I'm not jumping the gate." She shrugged. "Alright then! Stand back!" I walked back, in confusion as she brought her leg up. She kicked the gate.

The lock fell off and the gate was wide open. "LIGHTBULB WHAT THE HE-" She covered my mouth with her hand. "Shush! You're gonna get us caught!" I took her hand off my face and sighed. "You just broke the gate." "No I didn't! There's just a small dent in it!" Lightbulb grabbed my hand and started walking. "You have a problem with grabbing people's hands."

"O-Oh! Yeahhh, huge problem! It's like muscle memory at this point haha!" I could tell she was a bit nervous, but about what? I shrugged it off as she took me into town. "You're not.. kidnapping me, are you?" I asked, a bit confused and concerned on what we were doing here. "You're so silly, Painty! We're just going to the coffee shop!" "Coffee shop- It's 9 pm! It's like you want to stay up more."

"They have donuts and stuff too! I'm hungry and I don't know anywhere else to go. Plus, Testy still hasn't brought groceries like xe said she would!" "Do you even have money?" "Yes, duh!" We walked into the store and we head to the cashier. "Hello! Welcome to La Coffee Ship. What can I get for you?" "I'll have one- no two donuts please! Extra icing." "Who will that be for?" "Lightbulb!"

I wasn't really paying attention, mostly looking around the place until the cashier asked me what I wanted. I looked at the cashier and realized they looked a bit familiar.. "Hey, you look like someone I know." I cocked my eye up at his comment. "Mhm, yeah sure. Can I get a latte?" "Okay, and who will that be for?" "Paintbrush." Cashier's eyes widen when they heard my name. "No way.. Paintbrush?!" They slammed their hands on the table. "Uh, yeah?" "It's me! Pickle!"

"What?! I haven't seen you in forever! I didn't know you worked here." Pickle typed my name down on the table as he spoke. "Yeah, I actually go to the college a few blocks away. Well, it's orientation." "No way!" Lightbulb said, butting into our conversation. "We go there too! We should hang out sometime!" I was a little annoyed at her but smiled at her goofiness. "Totally! I met this really cute guy, his name is Knife and we've been together for a while." "Ooo! Looks like Pickle's finally got rizz." Pickle rolled his eyes playfully. "Well jeez Paintbrush, you haven't changed at all."

I laughed a bit at his comment. "Nope! I'm still the same good ol' Paintbrush." "Y'know," Pickle started, as he gave the orders to his worker who he called 'Mic' the orders. "We should have a double date. Me and Knife, with you and Lightbulb." "Oh- we're not-" "We would love to!" Lightbulb said, interrupting me. "Great! Oh and Paintbrush, I got a new number a while back. Here." He wrote his number on a piece of paper and handed it to me. "Hope we can talk soon!"

-

We finally left the restaurant after eating our food. Lightbulb payed for my drink since I didn't have money and gave me one half of her donuts. "Why did you agree to the double date?" I asked her. "We're not even dating!" "I didn't want him to be embarrassed! Besides, it's not like we have to go dating, we can go as friends!" I sighed. "But now he's gonna get the wrong idea!" Lightbulb shrugged and walked front of me.

"Cry about it."
