Chp 16: She isn't safe

Maria's POV

It's only been a few days since my transformation and the tension is only rising. 

How can you live in peace when you know that your daughter could be taken, or worse, killed, right before your eyes?

Elizabeth can sense this in me and she is becoming very upset. And I hate myself for it. Am I really that bad of a liar that I can't even fake my emotions for the sake of my own daughter?

I force myself to get up and leave my room.

"Alec?", I find him sitting with Elizabeth,"Could you take her out for a walk for awhile? I just...need to figure some things out."

"You alright?", he frowns.

"Yeah.", I sigh,"I just...need to relax for a little bit."

He gives me an unconvinced look, but nods,"Well, alright. C'mon, Elizabeth. Let's give mommy some alone time."

She skips over and I give her a kiss on the head before she leaves with him.

I go to my room and flop down on the couch. The bad thing about becoming a new born is that I can't even take a nap. I'm just always so active now. Especially because I'm a new-born.

Suddenly, I hear a faint crash.

My body immediately sits up as I'm looking out of my door with a frown on my face.

*crash*

There it is again.

Trying to be as quiet as possible, I rush out of my room. 

I can smell whoever, or whatever, is in here. And the smell is something that's very familar. But I just can't put my finger on it.

Until.

"Hello, Maria."

I quickly turn around, completely surprised and terrified of the person standing besides me.

"Demetri...", I hiss his name underneath my breath,"What do you want?"

He casually smirks and walks towards me,"You know exactly why I'm here. And who I'm here for."

There's anger in my eyes,"I swear to god, if you even touch her, I will rip your throat out!" My voice has risen to a shout.

He cocks his head and looks as me.

"Looks like someone has been changed.", he frowns.

"Yes.", I calmly reply,"So now you know that I can kill you if you push your fucking limit!"

He roughly grabs my wrist. Hard enough that it actually hurts. As if he's about to tear my hand off right now. But I don't give him that chance.

I raise my arm and bring it down on his arms as hard as I can, causing him to let go of me hand quickly.

He quickly grabs my neck and pins me down on my bed. And even though I'm a newborn, I can't find enough to escape. Maybe because he's so much more trained than me.

He leans in extremely close to my face,"Listen here you filthy bitch. You're ruining the Volturi because of your stupidity and selfishness. There's no way Alec will stay here."

"You...can't do that!", I scream and find enough strength to push him off of me.

I push him out of my room and across the hall. 

I stands up and smiles, slyly and comes at me again. I quickly turn around, dodging his attack swiftly and gracefully. My feet move quickly and I jump out of the window.

Until he grabs me by the throat and slams me against the tree. Again, causing my entire body to ache in pain. He wants to kill me. 

The thought ironically rings in my head like an alarm.

He's not here to give me a warning.

Or a chance.

He's here to be done with me. To get me out of the way.

He wants to end me!

"NO!!", I scream and roughly push him off me,"Get the fuck away from me!"

His eyes are like small fires. Full of anger and hatred. It's so hard to imagine that this is the same Demetri who was all flirty and buddy-buddy with me in 12th grade. 

Demetri takes a small step towards me, but seems distracted and before I can fathom what's going on, he dissapears into the woods. 

I start to follow, thinking he might be after Elizabeth. But when Alec shows up, I understand why he left. 

"Maria.", he runs over and frowns,"What happened."

My eyes move down towards Elizabeth and quickly smile,"Nothing. I just missed you two so much, that I wanted to come and find you."

Elizabeth runs into my arms as I give her a hug. Behind her, I give Alec a look that tells him that something terrible just happened. 

We drive to the Cullen's house and I drop Elizabeth off with Renesmee and the werewolves. They'll take good care of her. I trust them, and eventually nagged Alec enough for him to trust them too.

As soon as they're out of sight, Alec asks.

"Okay. Tell me exactly what happened.", he says seriously.

They all wait expectantly.

"....Demetri came.", I say quietly, refusing to meet any of their eyes at first.

No one says anything for a few moments so I continue.

"He...ummm...we...sort of got into a struggle.", I whisper.

"What did he do to you?", Alec says with anger clear in his voice.

I look up at him,"...I think he was trying to kill me..."

Everyone in the room stiffens.

The anger and protectiveness is almost radiating off of Alec now.

"He knew that I was in the way. And he was willing to do anything to get what the Volturi wants. And what they want is you...", I say quietly.

"Well they are known to act violently to get what they want.", Edwards says distastefully.

Alec pinches the bridge of his nose.

"Ok. New rule.", he says,"First off, Maria, you're not gonna be alone now. No one is. They will attack anyone who's close to Elizabeth or me."

I shake my head and begin to pace the room.

Now it's not only our daughter.

But everyone who's in danger now.
