'Eugene!' Rapunzel screamed far in the distance from the field on the edge of the Capitol. A chill crept down Eugene's spine. He turned around and zigzagged through the giant Beeches towering above him.

During either the walk through the forest or their picnic, he lost his bracelet, the one Rapunzel had made when she was locked up in the tower. So they had split up to find it.

A fissure with a wild river steaming through it split the grassland from the dark forest. He had to find the rope bridge. Smoke entered Eugene's nostrils. It couldn't be. The burning rope bridge crashed into the fissure as he dashed past the last few trees. Groups of jays launched in the air as the bang echoed through the woods.

A targeted attack.

Rapunzel screamed again. She was getting closer.

His heart pulsed his blood around like crazy. There was only one option left. He made speed and jumped into the fissure. Rocks scraped his legs and tore holes in his pants as he hit the bottom of the shallow river. He threw down his arms and his head reached the surface of the water. The swirling water threw him around and smashed him against the sharp rocks, drawing cuts in his arms. Eugene clung his legs to a large rock, gasped for air and looked around. On the left was a flat stone from where he could climb the fissure. With screaming legs, he launched himself at the stone and crawled on it. He spit out water and took a few deep breaths before getting up and climbing the wall.

Footsteps resonated above him. Rapunzel ran across a ridge into a cave followed by a masked man holding a curved dagger. Eugene stretched out his hand to reach the ridge and pulled himself up, roaring in pain. He rushed into the cave, gasping for air, his hands shaking. All his wounds begged him to stop running, but he refused to give in. 'Rapunzel!'

He turned left, his side scraping the wet ivy-covered sides of the cave. The few smoldering torches radiated just enough light to reveal a silhouette in the distance. Rapunzel lay motionless next to a small lake, her back facing him. 'Rapunzel! I'm here!' A red gradient slowly faded away in the shallow water next to her.

'Eugene?' She mumbled. His legs started shaking. He crashed next to her, turned her around and laid her on his knees, revealing a giant wound surrounded by ripped clothes on Rapunzel's belly. A strike of fear shot through his body, making him choke for a second. Tears clouded his vision when he realized his hands were wet and warm.

'Don't leave me.' Eugene cried. He pressed his hands against the wound, but the blood flowed through his fingers.

Rapunzel's eyes fluttered. 'I-I'm... sorry. I love you.' The fading spark in her eyes pierced right through his heart.

'I love you too.' He held her closer and kissed her lips.

Eugene clinged onto her hair, hoping to ignite a spark of her healing powers. 'Please, please save her! Start glowing! Glow!' Eugene took a deep breath. 'F-f-flower, gleam and glow... Let your powers shi...' A golden glow appeared in his left hand, which traveled through Rapunzel's hair. 'W-what?' The wound on his hand reappeared for a second before the glow died out. 'Hang on!'

'Flower, g-gleam and glow. Let your powers shine.' The golden glow reappeared.

'M-make the clock reverse. Bring back what once was mine.' Her locks grew while his shaking hands guided it towards her belly. Eugene gained hope, the kind of hope he would give everything up for.

'Heal what has been hurt... Change the fates' design.' The blood flowed back into Rapunzel's wound while her flesh crawled towards each other. The opposite was true for his hand, which started stinging.

'Save what has been lost. Bring back what once was mine. What once... was mine.' The glow disappeared, but Rapunzel's hair stayed blond. The wound on Eugene's hand started bleeding. With his shaking hand he carefully removed her blood soaked hair from her belly. Eugene broke down and cried. The wound had disappeared, no scar, nothing.

Rapunzel lifted her head and cried softly. Eugene hugged her and gently pressed his head against hers. He couldn't imagine how his life would have continued without her. Her life was the greatest gift he ever could have received. Out of all the people Eugene had known throughout his life, Rapunzel was the one who pulled him out of the darkness and made him feel like he deserved a second chance. She was the jewel he had been looking for. He held her in his arms before carrying her all the way home.

'Rapunzel has awakened!' A courtier yelled as he ran into the room. Eugene threw away his book and ran to Rapunzel's room. It had been a week since they arrived at the castle. Rapunzel had been screaming and yelling every night while Eugene sat next to her. Whatever the healers tried, they couldn't help her. It was one of the toughest weeks he had gone through.

Her room reflected her personality: Vibrant colors everywhere with joyful drawings of landscapes and her loved ones on the walls. On her left was a small balcony with a beautiful view, reaching all the way out till the city wall. Her room was cleaned up, but it would have been a big mess without Cassandra.

Rapunzel sat on the edge of her four-poster bed and smiled. The tender look in her eyes melted his heart, causing tears to form in his eyes.

'I was so worried. Thank god you are awake.' He lifted her up and gently kissed her on her soft lips.

'You can stop worrying. But what about you? How are your wounds?' She said while scanning his body.

'They're no big deal. As long as you're ok.'

Rapunzel sat down and patted her bed. 'Let me heal you.' She wrapped her golden locks around his wounds. The golden glow traveled through her hair as she sang, but when Eugene removed the hair from his hand, revealing the same bleeding cut. The other wounds hadn't disappeared, either.

'Rapunzel stared at his wound, looking worried.

Eugene looked confused. 'Maybe your hair has lost the ability to heal?'

Rapunzel stood up and walked around. 'No, it glowed. I can feel the magic flowing. It just won't enter your body. I can't heal... you.'

'Oh...' Eugene looked to the side. He stood up and stared through the window. 'That's a small price for your life. Don't worry about it. You couldn't heal me before anyway. They will heal with time.'

'I guess you're right.' She combed her hand through her hair and stared through the window. Her mood switched back to normal. 'Let's go outside. I've been in this room for way too long.'

'Woah, woah, don't you first want to let your mom and dad know you're awake? They are probably kinda worried.'

'I will, I will, I just have to be outside for a minute.'

'Very worried?' He tried to convince her with his smile.

'I have no idea where they are right now anyway.' It took a while before all her hair left the room. Eugene shook his head, smiled and ran after her.

'How is your hand?' Rapunzel asked Eugene while they walked through the hallways towards the dining room. It had been a month since Rapunzel's long blond hair had grown back.

Eugene shrugged. 'The same. I don't think it's gonna heal.' All his other wounds had healed, except the one on his left hand, the one that had glowed gold.

'No, it will.' Rapunzel looked away with a disappointed face and squeezed her fists.

Eugene shook his head. 'It hasn't shown any sign of healing. I'll have to live with it.'

'You shouldn't have to.'

He raised his mouth. 'I can deal with it. It only hurts if it touches something.'

She looked him in the eyes, which told her he meant it. 'I love you.'

'I love you too, blondie.'
