note: I reordered the story, so their should be a chapter before this one, but I haven't finished that one yet, so the jump to this chapter will feel rushed.

Rapunzel rode on Maximus through Old Corona with Eugene next to her on a white horse they 'borrowed' from the stables. In the distance appeared a small village.

When they tried to leave the city walls, a few guards tried to stop them, but they were able to jump over the barricade with their horses. What were the guards going to do? Attack the princess? The guards chased them, but it was easy to get rid of them in the woods.

'See, no spikes so far.' Rapunzel said.

'Uhm, I wouldn't speak too quickly.' Next to the entrance of the village was a black spike. Most houses were pierced by them and the roads were impossible to cross with a wagon.

'No, no, no!' Rapunzel jumped off Maximus and dug her hands in her hair. Eugene walked towards her and put his hand on her shoulder.

'I'm sorry.' he whispered.

'There has to be an explanation for this. Maybe... maybe he just...' but she couldn't come up with anything that made sense. She took a deep breath. 'I wanna know what's going on.' She wiped away her tears and looked around. People were staring at her. A boy, fourteen years old, walked up to them. He had black hair with big blue eyes. On top of his head he wore goggles.

'What are you doing here? It's dangerous!' the boy said.

'What?' Rapunzel stumbled, 'I don't care! What happened here?'

'Y-you don't know?' The boy stumbled backwards. She realized her mistake. She had to keep their hopes up.

'of course I know. I mean how bad is it? Are there any wounded?'

The boy shook his head. 'We don't have any wounded. The spikes kill you or miss you.'

'Why are you still here then?' Eugene asked the boy, afraid for the answer.

'Where can we go? If we leave this place we will have to sleep on the streets. All the other villages are already full of refugees. The spikes slowed down growing after a few days. It's the best we've got.'

'Is there nothing we can do to destroy them?' Rapunzel asked.

'I'm trying to make a potion that can destroy them, but all of them have failed so far. We're all hoping the capitol finds something out and soon, but in the meantime I will not give up. Do you promise you will help us?'

'Yes of course! Don't worry we will figure something out.' Rapunzel said, trying to sound as convinced as she could.

'Varian? What did I say about talking to strangers?' A man walked out of the house behind him. His face froze when his eyes fell on the long blond hairs. 'I'm so sorry, princess. You shouldn't be here. It's dangerous.'

'Don't worry about me. I'm here to help, but we first need to know more about the spikes. Can you help me with that?'

'of course, please follow me. I'm afraid we don't know much about the spikes either.' Varian's dad said. They followed him into his house. Spikes were growing out of the floor through the entire house. Some were so monstrous they reached upstairs. They just managed to pass them without touching them.

'So the spikes keep increasing?' Eugene asked as they sat in their living room, which had just enough space left for the seats. The other furniture lay in pieces spread through the room.
