Chapter 18 - Confusion

Fog. It was everywhere. Seeking help, he turned around his own axis and looked in vain for a clue. But the fog was too thick to find anything to hold on to. It would have been a hopeful prop for his brain.

Abruptly he turned around. There! He heard it. The snap of a twig! He took two steps back in fear when he saw the shadow through the fog. He kept getting closer! Desperate, he backed away even more, tripping over an exposed root. Damned! There it stood, bending over him. He crawled backwards, trembling. A second later he was back on his feet and sprinting. Please! Please stay away! He wanted to scream, but not a single sound came out of his throat. What was going on here?

Suddenly he stopped dead in his tracks. His legs! They didn't move! Again he turned to all sides. Was he wrong, or was the fog beginning to recede? He blinked. Once again. And again. Indeed!

Finally he recognized the surroundings around him. He was in a swamp. In the middle of a forest. But straight ahead one could see a huge meadow that was illuminated by the sun. Now the fog was completely gone. He sighed in relief and freed himself from the swamp. He slowly walked out of the forest. At the edge of the woods, he turned around one last time.

He flinched, wanted to scream, wanted to run away. Opposite him stood the shadow, staring at him from behind his dark brown cloak. He raised his hands.

"Obi Wan." Startled, he widened his eyes. This voice. It was so familiar to him. Too well known. No! Leave me alone! The shadow also raised his hands. A moment later he had pulled the hood off his head.

"Qui Gon?"

"It's really me, Obi-Wan."

He shook his head anxiously. Leave me alone! "That's impossible!" He took a step back.

"Please listen to me, my old Padawan."

"Stop calling me that! You're dead!"

"No, Obi-Wan. I became one with the Force."

"What do you want from me?!"

"You must make a choice, Obi-Wan. It may soon be too late."

"Stop talking in riddles!"

"You have to help me."

"And how?" His fingers trembled. Pain. huge pain He had already lost too much.

"My soul. It is trapped. You must free it."

"What? I ... I'm a Jedi. No ..."

"Only you can do it."

"And how?"

"Naboo. Where Darth Maul killed me."

"How am I supposed to do that?!" Despair. Pure despair.

"Travel to Naboo." The fog was coming back again.

"Yes, but what am I supposed to do there?" The fog grew thicker.

"Meditate." The mist had almost reached them.

"And then?"

"Then my soul will be free." The fog crept between his legs.

"Simply that way?" No Answer. The fog enveloped him. "Master Qui-Gon!"

Qui-Gon became shadow. It was little more than a whisper. "I'm no imagination. I'm real." Silence. Nothing. Except. Fog.

His pulse was racing. Drenched in sweat, Obi-Wan woke from his dream. With lit lightsaber in hand.
