Sharp sunlight peeked in through the rainforest canopy and brushed Grace's face, as she lay on the floor. She didn't want to get. She wanted to lay here processing what had happened to her and her siblings last night.
Did we really get visited by dragons? Did they really give up their lives so that we could use their powers? Well, alright, we didn't just get fancy powers. We must do something with it.
That was why Grace was still on the ground. She wasn't sure that she was the right person for the job. Yes, she could fight, was amazing at fighting and absolutely loved it, but she wasn't a 'have the fate of an entire species in her hands' kind of girl. She was more like a 'let's go punch Robert' kind of girl.
"How long are you going to pretend to be sleeping, Grace?" David called.
"I'm not pretending to sleep. I'm trying to figure out how to stand without falling over." Grace replied.
"Role over onto your stomach and do a push up." Joy told her.
Grace obeyed and almost fell on her face. The was a small weight on her back. She managed to sit in her knees and twist her head to look over her shoulder. Wings were producing out of her back. They were ice blue and pale orange. Thoughtfulness and surprise if she remembered correctly.
"I guess I didn't expect it to actually work," Grace admitted.
"Well, it did, and Alex almost burnt down the entire forest when he sneezed." Ann added. Grace concentrated. She had a whole knew set of muscles and had no idea how to use them. A wing shot out suddenly, and smacked Joy.
"Hey!"
"Sorry...maybe."
"Well," Andy said, "This is going to be a fun day."
It was. It was also chaotic.
Everyone was trying to figure out their abilities and not hurt others. Alex lit Andy on fire, accidentally, so it was a good thing he's fireproof. Joy almost hit David with her venomous tail and Ann whacked Grace into Mark (who is really cold) with her tail.
When Grace tried to fly for the first time, she jumped off her small balcony and preceded to plummet to the ground. She saved herself by grabbing a lose vine and sliding to the ground. It took a while, but soon everyone was able to fly. It was still a bit wobbly, but they were getting there.
They spoke in Dragon and Grace figured out how to control her scale colours. Scaring her siblings was the highlight of her day. They went to a nearby stream, that wasn't quite big enough to be called a river, and Ann swam up and down it a hundred times and didn't need to come up for air. They weren't small laps either.
By the end of the day, everyone had scratches and bruises from their failed flying attempts.
When Grace collapsed into her hut, her back hurt from using muscles she didn't have or need before.
Sleep came for her, and Grace welcomed it. It had been an exhausting day.
Oh. We forgot to see Mum and Dad this morning.
She fell asleep.
