The room was white. Too white. Blinding white. Everything was white. Hugh couldn't see anything else. It was like he was trapped in a cloud. And then there were voices.
"Subject is responsive."
"Are the readings stable?"
"Negative, levels are fluctuating."
"What about the sedative?"
"We might need to adjust the dosage."
Hugh tried to speak, to ask what was happening, but he couldn't form words. His mouth was dry and his throat was scratchy.
"Subject is showing signs of distress."
"Check the vitals."Hugh felt hands on his body, touching him in places that made him uncomfortable.
"What's happening?" he managed to croak out.
"Subject is conscious. Increase the dosage."
Hugh felt a sharp prick in his arm, and then everything went black.
When he woke up again, he was still in the white room. His head was pounding, and his body felt heavy. He tried to move, but his limbs were leaden.
"Subject is awake."
"What are the readings?"
"Stable, but slightly elevated."
"Did the dosage work?"
"It's hard to say. We might need to run more tests."
Hugh tried to sit up, but he was strapped down to the bed. He felt a surge of panic rise up in his chest.
"What are you doing to me?" he shouted.
The scientists looked at him, their expressions blank.
"You're part of an experiment," one of them said.
"What kind of experiment?"
"We're trying to unlock the potential of your peculiarity."
Hugh felt his heart skip a beat. His peculiarity? What did that have to do with anything? "Please, let me go," he pleaded.
The scientists ignored him, going back to their work. Hugh tried to struggle against the restraints, but it was no use.
He was trapped.
