"Where's Soda and Darry? They don't have work today, do they?" Pony asked.

"They don't, but Soda broke his arm." I said casually.

"Wait what?!" Pony asked, very shocked.

Pony always got along with Soda the best. He always argued with Darry like I did. Pony and I just didn't talk to each other as much as when we were younger. We talked more a few years ago than we did now. Now I just tried to get out and hang with Johnny and Diana. I would rather be the third wheel with them than be stuck here.

"Soda got the letter, but he promised he wouldn't go. So he broke his fucking arm." I said, sighing with relief that he wouldn't have to leave us.

"What?" He asked. It only just occurred to me that he had no idea about the draft.

"War. Draft. Soda. Not going. Broke his arm." I explained, not meaning to sound as annoyed as I did.

"Oh." He said.

"I'm goin' out." I said, standing up.

"Wait, where ya goin'?" Pony said, grabbing my arm.

"To the lot." I lied.

"Yeah yeah, have fun at the tracks." Pony said. I chuckled.

"Don't tell Darry, just tell him I'm at Diana's." I said, walking out the door.

"Affirmative." He said.

Darry didn't want me going to the tracks anymore because apparently Socs loved it there. Did I care? Hell no. The tracks are my life now that I finally could go back and feel good. I still hated watching cars go across the tracks.

I sat down on the hill just as a train went by. One day...I thought to myself...One day. One day I will be driving those trains.

Every few minutes a train went by on either side. I watched eagerly, studying them. I would tell myself what kind of train it was.

I was about to head home since the sun was going to set soon and I wanted to watch the sunset with Pony on the roof. All of a sudden, I saw a mustang that obviously belonged to a Soc get stuck on the rails. I immediately thought of my parents.

I ran over to the mustang to see who it belonged to. It was Cherry and Marcia. I knocked on the window and Cherry was driving. I hate Cherry, but I wasn't about to let someone else's death be on my conscience.

"Cherry, a train is gonna come soon, ya gotta get outta the car." I said.

"It's my dad's, I can't leave it." She said in a panicked voice. There was a train horn in the distance.

"Cherry! Marcia! Get out of the car!" I yelled again.

Marcia got out and we both tried to get Cherry out, but she wouldn't budge. The train was almost here and we couldn't do anything else. I pushed Marcia away and yanked Cherry out right before the train hit the car. The train started to slow down and come to a stop.

"You're lucky I saved your ass!" I yelled. I walked away. I hate Cherry so much. Pony had a crush on her for a while and she actually went out with him. He finally puckered up the courage and she just ran back to Bob. After the date too.

I made it back before sundown. I opened the door and found Soda on the couch with a cast extending to the middle of his forearm.

"What'd ya break?" I asked.

"My wrist." He said, smirking. "Now I can't drafted." Soda smiled.

His smile is contagious, so I smiled too. Darry was in the kitchen, making dinner.

"It's gonna be a few more minutes." Darry said.

"Well Pony and I are watching the sunset anyway." I said, shrugging. "Pony come on!" I ran outside and started climbing onto the roof. I climbed on the fence, then the roof above the porch, then the roof. I sat down and Pony joined me. We hadn't done this in a while and I missed spending time with him.

"Hey, Ponyboy." I said, hoping to start a conversation between us.

"Hey, Kat." He replied.

"How are ya?" I asked. This was getting awkward.

"Good...Did ya do somethin'?" He asked, getting suspicious.

"No, it's just that I haven't really talked to ya in so long." I responded, hoping he would understand my honesty.

"It is weird, isn't it." He said. I nodded.

"Also somethin' may have happened at the tracks..." I reluctantly revealed.

'What? Did ya get jumped?" He asked.

"No, nothin' like that. It's Cherry." I said. Pony's face turned to a frown.

"What about 'er?" He asked, trying not to be phased.

"Her car got stuck on the rails, like mom and dad. I had to save her and Marcia from the train." I said. I almost called Marcia by her nickname, Marsh. Things have been tense between Pony and I and Cherry. Marcia and I decided to stay friends through it all, but if Cherry and Pony found out, they would be pissed.

A few weeks ago, Cherry cheated on Pony. I don't know who the guy was, but Pony and I saw him kissing Cherry. She was really into it. Pony had almost broken down right there and I did my best to comfort him.

We were silent for the rest of the sunset. I never enjoyed sunsets as much as Pony. I watched them so I could get closer with him. I loved the night time and I loved sunrises.

The nights were so peaceful and calm. Things were never peaceful and nights were like my escape. Sunrises symbolize a new beginning. Every sunrise brought a new day, a new opportunity.

"Ya comin'?" Pony asked, getting up so he could climb off the roof.

"Nah, I'll stay here." I said, admiring the stars that were beginning to appear. I felt tears in my eyes as I thought about all the struggles in this world.

"Hey, what's wrong?" Pony asked, noticing my tears. That was when I actually broke down. I could barely say anything, I just cried into his shoulder as he hugged me.

He hugged me while I cried. I felt a sense of comfort being shielded by one of my brothers.

"I can't handle the fights anymore, Pony. Darry, just-he just doesn't understand how I'm feelin'." I explained, choking on my tears.

"Kat, it'll turn out okay. It did for me, and it will for you as well. It'll get better." Pony said, this wasn't comforting to me in the slightest.

"No it won't, it never has...never will." I choked on my words. I felt my breathing get shaky and I could barely get anything out of my throat. A cry, a word, nothing.

"Kat?" Pony asked, noticing this. I couldn't say anything. I coughed, holding him tight. Just because I'm used to panic attacks, doesn't mean they scare me any less when I get them.

"Is it a panic attack?" He asked. I just nodded my head. He started rubbing my back and trying to calm me down.

"I'm gonna get Soda." He said. I don't know how that would work considering we are on the roof and Soda has a broken wrist.

One thing I know about Soda. He'll do crazy things for the people he loves.

Ponyboy climbed off of the roof and I waited. I was hugging my legs close to my chest. I was trying to control my breathing. I was coughing and I could barely breathe.

All of a sudden, I see Soda climbing onto the roof. He quickly caught on to the situation and came over. He put his arm, which was in the cast, around me and pulled me into a hug. I don't even know how he was able to get up here.

"Breathe with me." He said calmly and quietly. I tried to steady my breathing, but it wasn't working. Soda held out his free hand. I grabbed it and squeezed it hard. I was able to steady my breathing and I hugged both Soda and Pony. I was still in tears.

"Wanna tell me what's wrong?" He asked when I let go.

"The fights." Pony said for me. Soda nodded and I leaned into him.
