CHAPTER TWO
Ready For The Worst

The five of them stared at the dead corpse of a variant of Mara's dad.

"That means... dreams are the windows into the lives of our multiversal selves." Stephen breathed out quietly.

The teenager turned around, "that was his theory."

"So, that recurring nightmare where I'm running naked from a clown..." Wong started to ask, causing Stephen, Mara and Rosa to furrow their eyebrows in confusion.

"Somewhere out there, it's real." The teenager responded.

"Somewhere out there I had a ponytail." Stephen said, standing up.

Wong said, "there could be more creatures coming for her."

"The power is dangerous enough in the hands of a kid. Imagine if a real threat acquired it?" Stephen whispered to Wong.

"Haven't you met enough teenagers with dangerous powers to know that they can be threats?" Mara questioned her dad.

The teenager backed away from the group. "It occurs to me, young one, we don't know your name." Wong brought up a good point.

    "America Chavez." America stated.

Wong continued, "Miss Chavez, will you come with us to Kamar-Taj? You'll be safe there." He suggested.

"How do I know you won't betray me like he did?" America questioned Stephen.

"I guess you're just gonna have to trust me." Stephen told her.

They looked at the body. "What do we do with him?" Wong asked.

Stephen used sorcery to open up the roof of stones and placed him in there.

"That's gotta violate an ordinance." Wong said.

"Ah, I've buried worse." Stephen replied.

"Hopefully, the building won't crumble down while someone's in there and they just see a dead corpse." Mara hoped.

"It would be kind of funny, though." Rosa responded.

"The creature that killed him, did... did it have the same markings as the octopus?" Wong asked.

"Runes." Stephen answered, so did Rosa.

Wong's face turned to stun, "this isn't sorcery."

    "It's witchcraft." Stephen said.

They looked at Rosa. "Oh, this isn't me. I'd ask Wanda, but she and I aren't exactly on speaking terms right now." She told them.

"I think I might." Stephen muttered. He looked at Mara.

"We'll be back." Mara told Rosa, who just nodded.
