CHAPTER THIRTY SEVEN
convincing the devil

"Rhys! Holy god, what happened?" Stiles said frantically from where he still laid paralysed on the floor. For ten minutes, Rhys had been stuck - his eyes glowing, his skin going paper-white, and dark circles appeared around his eyes. He looked like a lifeless corpse.

"Stiles, where's Matt? Where has everyone gone?" Rhys asked looking around, his widening at the sight of Jackson guarding the door.

Careful not to upset the Kanima, Rhys crouched beside Derek and Stiles, his brows furrowed in confusion when he noticed Derek's claws injecting his own thigh.

"Uh, he shot Scott and took him somewhere," Stiles explained hurriedly, Rhys' eyes widened, Scott was a werewolf he could heal but he still felt pain. "And he's got Melissa locked up with my dad and Maya."

Derek looked at Rhys, "What did you see?" He asked urgently.

Rhys hesitated, remembering how he felt drowning. He sighed, giving into Derek's harsh glare, "I saw Gerard, he was drowning Matt."

Stiles' mouth fell open in shock, Derek seemed to be placing two and two together, "The Argents they're coming here, Matt wants the Beastiary, he's becoming the Kanima because he's broken so many rules." Derek explained, he titled his head towards Rhys. "Where was Gerard doing this?"

Rhys shook his head, "I'm not sure, I only saw him drowning Matt - I don't know where or when but I'm going to assume tonight."

Rhys then stood up, "What did Matt do, when he realised I was using my powers?" He asked quickly, trying to formulate a plan.

"He- he got angry," Stiles said cautiously, giving Rhys a worried glance as he paced backwards and forth around the room. "What are you thinking?"

"I'm thinking..." Rhys started, turning to Stiles with a look of determination. "What if I tried to convince Matt of his death? He might rethink his choices and leave or run away. I mean he knows I'm a necromancer."

"No," Stiles said immediately, "that is a terrible idea, he's unpredictable and unrea-"

He was interrupted by the sounds of gunfire and alarms ringing. The lights turned off, replaced by flashing yellow ones. Rhys looked towards the Kanima, he was distracted by something down the corridor.

"Derek," Rhys said quickly, "I'm leaving you here and taking Stiles, don't hold it against me, okay?"

He hooked his arms through Stiles' lifting him up, he was definitely too weak for this. Thankfully, Scott appeared at his side easily picking up Stiles, he looked at Derek, concerned.

"Take him, go!" He insisted, managing to sit up slightly.

Quickly, Scott dragged Stiles through the hallways of the police station. Rhys followed behind him, his heart rate picking up as he noticed Jackson trailing them. Rhys closed a door on his face and locked it, it was simply knocked down seconds later. He repeated it all the way to the interrogation room, where there was nowhere else to go. Thankfully, Jackson didn't break down this door.

Scott lowered Stiles into a chair, his head lolling back slightly. "Don't move," Scott told them, he then glanced to Stiles. "You know what I mean."

He left through the door, leaving Rhys and Stiles alone in the room. "This is fucking crazy," Rhys stated, shaking his head nervously. "I have to do something."

"Rhys, please," Stiles begged. "He's shot people, okay? And now the Argents are walking around and they probably want you dead too. Do not leave."

Rhys considered this, "Stiles," He sighed, "I could save his life."

"Why? He's done nothing but hurt you," Stiles replied irritably. "He doesn't deserve your pity."

"I won't be able to live with myself," Rhys whispered, moving closer to Stiles. "Knowing I could've saved someone's life and I chose not to." He stood up looking towards the door, he reached out a shaking hand. "Stay here."

"Rhys-" Stiles panicked tone was cut off by Rhys closing the door. He released a shaky breath, the dark hallway illuminated by the blaring of yellow alarms.

He turned the corner, he jumped backwards placing a hand on his heart, Matt stood there the Kanima circling his feet.

"Where'd you go, huh?" Matt asked angrily, he walked towards Rhys the gun still in his hand firmly. "I said you're mine!" he shouted.

"Matt, you need to listen to me," He said attempting to keep his voice from wavering in fear. "Something bad is going to happen if you don't stop thi-"

"Shut up," Matt shouted, pointed the gun at him. Rhys nodded, tears filling his eyes. "I told you, that you're with me and if you don't stay with me... well let's put it this way. Because, Rhys, if I can't have you, no one can!" his voice became distorted and louder towards the end.

Rhys flinched the voice ringing in his ears, when suddenly a bang was heard from the other room. Matt snapped his head towards it, sighing angrily, he took Rhys' arm and dragged him over to the sound.

They entered the cell block, where Mr Stilinski had broken free from his restraints. Matt huffed a breath, marching towards him angrily.

"Sheriff, look out!" Rhys tried to call, attempting to grab Matt and pull him back. He was too late, Matt whacked Mr Stilinski around the head with the barrel of the gun - knocking him out cold. Maya gasped, looking at Rhys worriedly.

"What did I tell you?!" Matt shouted, whirling around to Rhys. "You do not talk!"

"Matt!" Maya called, trying to get the attention of her nephew.

Rhys shook his head, "Matt, listen to me," he said again, "you have to listen. If you don't stop this you could-" Rhys blocked Matt's attempt to knock him out. "Listen to me! I'm trying to save your life!"

"Shut up, shut up!" Matt shouted. He walked around the room. Rhys' eyes widened, Matt was losing his mind.

Rhys, from the corner of his eye, noticed Stiles army crawling towards them. Rhys shook his head frantically, "Go." he mouthed, "now."

"Rhys!" Maya called, panic in her voice.

That was the last thing he heard, before Matt landed the shot and knocked Rhys out with the end of his gun.

After the whole scenario, if that's what you call it. Matt had been killed, just like Rhys saw and Maya had been enlightened to the supernatural side of Beacon Hills. And if Rhys was being honest, he was shocked at how well she took it.

"I'm just glad you're safe," She whispered, pulling him into a hug. She backed away, "But I think we might need to keep this a secret from Robin for a while, she might not take it as well."

Rhys laughed, nodding his head, "Yeah, that's a good idea."

One thing Maya don't know, was what Rhys was. And he planned to keep it that way until it was absolutely necessary for her to find out. It was just easier, he didn't want Maya to look at him any differently. He was still the same.
