CHAPTER ONE
suspicions

"As you all know," claimed Mr Curtis from where he stood, slouched, at the front of the class, "there was indeed a body found in woods last night."

Rhys looked up from the book he was discretely reading under the desk. Truthfully, he had no idea a body had been found in the woods last night, therefore his interest was peaked. Nothing interesting ever happened in this boring Californian town, so to hear there was a murder, it was pretty crazy and unexpected.

From the corner of his eye, he noticed his odd 'friends' - more like people he spoke to sometimes - Scott and Stiles, grin at each other, as if they knew something no one else did.

"And i'm sure your eager little minds are coming up with various macabre scenarios as to what happened," Mr Curtis continued, as he wrote something on the black board. "But I am here to tell you that the police have a suspect in custody, which means you can give your undivided attention to the syllabus, on your desks, outlining this semester."

A collective amount of groans and complaints pervaded the room. Rhys just sighed glaring at the piece of paper placed in front of him, he usually enjoyed english but he could tell that this semester was going to be a bad one. Mr Curtis made it his life ambition to be the most monotonous human to walk the earth.

Rhys' impressionable attention was then thrown to the door, where the vice principal and someone Rhys did not know had entered. She had a pale complexion and dark hair that was curled elegantly - she looked around nervously as the Vice Principal introduced her.

"Class, this is our new student, Allison Argent. Please do your best to make her feel welcome," he said before nodding at Mr Curtis and leaving quietly.

Allison smiled faintly before finding the only open seat in class, which happened to be right in front of Rhys. He smiled at her, hoping to make her less nervous - she reciprocated it kindly.

Then, Scott, for some crazy reason turned around and stuck out a pen for her to take. Allison looked surprised but gratefully took it.

"Thanks," she whispered. Scott turned back around, leaving Allison throughly confused.

That was definitely strange, Rhys decided.

"We will begin on Kafka's Metamorphosis on page one-thirty-three."

Rhys walked through the corridor at the end of the day with his friend, Harley, she was his first friend when he came to America after his parents died. They were both new to school so they stuck together and became fast friends. He was grateful to have her, she was like the sister he never had.

"Did you see the new girl?" Harley asked, as they walked to Rhys' locker. "She's super pretty, I think I physically swooned when I saw her."

Rhys twirled in his password grabbing his bag, before slamming it closed and leaning against it. "That's actually not surprising," Rhys chuckled.

"What's actually not surprising?" Stiles asked, inviting himself into the conversation with a stupid look on his face. Rhys rolled his eyes, Stiles seemed to pick it up. "Did you just roll your eyes at me?"

Rhys blinked, unbothered, "No."

"Yeah you did," Stiles countered, squinting his eyes.

"Okay, I did," Rhys admitted, "But that's because-" He was interrupted by Harley.

"Can you two not this year? I think Scott and I would appreciate it, if you didn't bicker constantly," Harley stared between them but Scott didn't seem bothered, distracted by Allison, who stood by her locker.
