December 5-Metropolis, Delaware
You had been waiting for Clark at your shared desk for over an hour. You were so anxious, you could barley focus on work. Your eyes shifted back to the screen when you got an email. You checked your inbox and read the message.
'Good morning, Ms. Walsh! This is Helen Brant with the New York Times. I have read your article, and I'm impressed. I think that your talent could be an excellent addition to our team. I understand that you just recently relocated, but I am offering a higher position and salary than you currently have. My contact information is below. If you are interested, please, let me know. Have a nice day!'
You must've been staring at the screen for a while, because Cat came up behind you and tapped your shoulder.
"You okay? You look like you've seen a ghost."
"I just got an email from the New York Times."
"Is your subscription up, or something?"
"They're offering me a job."
"What? Amber, that's amazing!"
"What's amazing?" Lois asked.
"Amber's going to work at the New York Times!"
"Oh my God! Congratulations!"
"I didn't say I was going."
"You'd be an idiot to say no!"
"I can't moving again. I finally feel at home here."
"Amber, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity."
"I need to think about it."
"What is there to think about? So many people would kill for a chance like that."
"The last thing I want to do is pack up me and Zeeke's life again. And what about Anthony and Cassie? They moved so that they could be close to Zeeke. It's a great opportunity, but, it's just not a good fit for me."
Your gazed shifted when you saw Jimmy walking to the copy room. You quickly followed after him.
"Jimmy!"
"Hey! You feeling better?"
"Uh, yeah. Have you seen Clark?"
"He called in sick today."
"Oh, okay. Thanks."
"No problem."
You went back to your desk and grabbed your coat and purse.
"Where are you going?" Lois asked you.
"I'll be back. If anyone asks, tell them I'm chasing a story."
You got into the elevator and waited as it took you all the way up. When it took you as far as it could go, you walked up the short flight of stairs to the roof.
The cold hit you the second you opened the door. You zipped up your coat and pulled the ELT out of your purse. You took a deep breath before pressing the button. The little red light on it began to light up and a quiet high pitched noise came from it.
Seconds later, Kal landed on the roof and rushed over to you.
"Amber, are you okay?"
"I'm fine."
"But, you used the ELT."
"I needed to talk to you."
"Amber, that's for emergencies only."
"I'd consider this an emergency."
"What's wrong?"
"I got a job offer."
"From who?"
"The New York Times."
"Wow."
"I think I'm going to go."
"Really?"
"Yeah, I mean, with Clark and I broken up, I don't really have a reason to stay."
"Oh."
"Unless you can think of one?"
"Uh, no."
"I figured."
"So, things are officially over with you and Clark?"
"Yeah. I can't be with someone who's going to keep secrets from me. That's why I love you, Kal. You'd never lie to me."
"Amber-"
"I guess what I'm trying to say is, goodbye."
"Goodbye?"
"I'm planning on leaving before the new year."
"Oh. That's soon."
"Yeah. I just wanted to let you know since this is one of the last times we'll be seeing each other regularly."
"Um-"
"Oh, I almost forgot. I never said thank you for the ELT and the necklace."
"No problem. I'm glad you like them."
By the time he realized what he had said, it was too late to take it back. He stuttered over his words as you smiled.
"I knew it! I knew it! I knew!"
"Amber, I think you have the wrong idea."
"Save it, Clark. I know the truth. Why didn't you just tell me?"
He sighed and held your hands in his.
"The only people that know are my parents, Conner, and the league."
"Conner?"
"Yeah. He's the reason why I've been so busy lately."
"I don't understand."
"I'll explain everything later."
"You know I wouldn't have told anyone about you, right?"
"I know, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have lied to you. I just wanted to protect you."
"Well, I'm safe."
"I know you are. But, if anything ever happened to you, Amber, I couldn't take it."
"You don't have to worry about that."
"I do. The day I first saw you in the bullpen was the best day of my life. I didn't know true love until I met you."
"Clark-"
"You remember the night of the gala? When I said that you had me?"
"Of course."
"I meant it. I love you, Amber Walsh. I will do anything you want, anything you ask, as long as I can still be yours."
"You love me?"
"I love you so much that it hurts. It hurts when we're together, because my heart is so full of you. And it hurts when we're apart, because I miss you so much."
Your smile grew with each word he spoke. You placed your hands on his chest and got closer to him.
"I love you, too, Clark. I love you so much, that I can't even express it."
"Yeah?"
"Yeah."
He pulled you in by your waist and conjoined your lips. You placed your hands on his face and slipped your tongue into his mouth. The kiss left you breathless as you pulled away and smiled.
"I still have to go back to work, Clark."
"Just a few more minutes."
"I'll see you after work."
"I can come with you."
"No, you called in sick. Remember?" You laughed and gave him one last kiss. "I'll see you soon."
"Hey."
"Hm?"
"I love you."
"I love you too, Superman."
