prologue ✷ the werewolf of midnight

━━━━━━━━━━━

WHEN SILAS LUPIN WOKE UP ON 4th NOVEMBER OF 1985, HE WASN'T EXPECTING HIS YOUNGER BROTHER, REMUS, TO BE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF HIS FRONT DOOR. It was raining, and although Remus was sniffing to show the rain was going to make him seriously ill, he stayed standing until Silas gave him the okay to enter.

"Remus, what the bloody hell are you doing here in the middle of the night," Silas grumbled, slamming the door behind his younger brother who immediately shook his head rapidly. His eyes were puffy and Silas realised Remus had been crying, "shit, Remus, what happened?"

"Aphelia left," Remus whispered and Silas' eyes grew wide. Although he knew Aphelia wasn't exactly the nicest woman in the world, it shocked him that she would suddenly up and leave, even when she and Remus had a child, no less.

"And Apollo?" Silas asked slowly, eyebrows narrowing as he saw the guilty look flash across his brother's face.

"He's in the car. Fell asleep on the way here," Remus explained, shivering slightly.

"Do you want some clean clothes, you're soaked and turning my house into an indoor pool," Silas said, chuckling, possibly to light the tension. It was wrong of him to do so, he knew it - but serious moments like this made him want to run away. He wasn't as good with Remus' constant mental crisis' like James and Lily Potter were.

"No, I wont be here long," Remus muttered, rubbing his nose with his damp sleeve and letting out another sniff, "Silas, can you do me a favour?"

"Sure," Silas shrugged, leaning against the doorframe and crossing his arms.

"Can you... look after Apollo?" Remus asked carefully, seeming to have known Silas' reaction. The older Lupin stood frozen for a moment, his mouth hung slightly as he stared at his brother. Surely Remus was joking, he couldn't be serious. Remus was rambling to an explanation, "I can't take care of him with my condition now that Aphelia's gone. We've had too many close calls even when she was around."

"Remus, he's your son," Silas muttered, taking a step forward and Remus immediately took a step back, shaking his head rapidly.

"Please," Remus whispered. Silas had never seen Remus beg as though his whole world was crumbling - it possibly was. The last time he remembered Remus begging was when they were kids and Silas had hit his growth spert, taking that chance and hovering anything over his brother's head. "I couldn't live with myself if something happened to him. You saw how dad was after I was... bitten..." Silas knew the words were bitter leaving Remus' mouth.
