Laura's pov

Night had fallen and we had managed to find shelter within a giant conch shell. I stared into the blade of my knife at my reflection, looking at the large red line over the left side of my face. As I slowly reached up to touch it, the sound of footsteps approaching stopped me. I looked over to see Jacob coming back with a net of what seemed to be fruits.

"Good, you're back. I started to get worried." I said, standing up. "I got some fruits. Strengthen up." He tossed one over to Maisie and another to me. I'm going to go for a short walk. If anything, scream." I said, grabbing the second lantern and heading out on my way.

As I approached the shores, I sat on a rock before opening up the book and turning to the last page. "Written by Lady Elizabeth Forenbridge.." I whispered.

"She was beginning to become too big for me to hide here away easily like it was when she was little, so it was time to let her go. She understood, I hope." I read quietly through the final paragraph of the book.

Even now, at the size she was, her horn was still too big for her head and she never liked when I brought it up. 'How about one more ride, girl?' Elizabeth said as she climbed atop her back. She lets out a happy growl before diving into the waters within the cove, carrying Elizabeth with her. Upon diving into the deep waters of the ocean, Elizabeth's dark brown hair begins to glow and illuminate into a white color, flowing behind her in the water. It was her favorite part of swimming along with enjoying it with her ocean friend. She watched as the fishes swam around the both of them.

I smiled as I read on, hearing a soft growl to the left of me. I looked over and just a couple of feet away lay the beast, asleep in the night. "So you're a girl.." I mumbled.

"Hey.." I closed the book and looked over to my right to see Jacob, holding his spear with a pissed expression. "Is everything alright?" I asked as I began to stand up. "Please, stay seated. I just wanted to check up on you, make sure everything is alright." He said, taking a seat next to me.

"Is Maisie okay?" I asked and he nodded.

It was silent for a few seconds between the two of us until he broke the silence. "You know, she just doesn't seem to understand that I have to do my job." He started. I raised a brow and looked at him slightly confused. "And that is?" I asked.

"Taking her back to where she came from, finding my crew, and killing the beast. She thinks that we're wrong for wanting to hunt these creatures." He said, sighing.

"Jacob..maybe just maybe she's right? Think about it... She's incredibly intelligent and if she wanted us dead we wouldn't be sitting here speaking to one another." I said and he sighed. "not you too..calling it she." he rolled his eyes.

"Jacob, you're not seeing the point. Maisie saved her, didn't she? Saved her from being captured and killed. They saw that as a peace treaty. So she returned the favor, saving her from being killed by your captain. Saving both of you as a matter of fact, as I was told he was going to shoot through you just to get to..her.." I placed my fingers at the center of his chest.

"Aye.."

"Aye.." I repeated. With my hand on his chest, I could feel his heartbeat, which was beating at a fast pace. Was he afraid of something? Did I worry him?

I moved back, looking away. "Listen there's something I have to tell you." We both said at the same time. I looked at him before chuckling slightly. "You go first.." I said. "I know about your hair.." He starts and I raise a brow. "My hair? I don't quite understand you, Jacob. My hair is completely fine thank you." I responded.

"No, I mean... Your hair glows! The day you were knocked into the water, I was swimming to get to you and your hair was glowing a bright white." He explained. I immediately stood up. "What?! That's impossible.." I whispered. I looked out towards the ocean and began taking off my boots along with my blouse and trousers, only to be stopped by Jacob. "Woah slow down.." Before I could drop everything, I looked at him.

"By the looks of it, you didn't know. But by the look on your face you know something.." he said, tilting his head. "Jacob. If what you're saying is true..then my parents aren't who they said they are and I've been lied to my whole life!" I shouted.

"It's okay. It's okay, look we'll figure this out tomorrow. Right now isn't the time for you to be jumping into the ocean. It's pitch black." he said.

"Which is a good time-"

"Your hair only glowed when you were extremely deep. The moment we came closer and closer to the surface it faded away and went back to normal and I will not allow you to go in there at this time. Okay?" he said, staring deep into my eyes. I let out a sigh in defeat.

I tied back up my blouse and fixed my trousers before grabbing my book and picking up the lantern. "I'm going to get some rest. Try not to stay out here too late. Get some sleep too. You need it." I suggested before walking away.

As she walked away, Jacob watched as she left, his heart still not at ease at what had just taken place. He still hadn't gotten an answer as to what she wanted to tell him, but he decided to put it aside as the thought of her alone took over his entire mind. "Who are you, Sally Norseman.." He muttered.
