His hands stopped reaching out for you, turning over to reveal a shard of something... white and glowing.
Hesitantly, you placed your hand in his and picked up the shard carefully.
"Is.. this a piece of your soul? Is this how you are able to hold your form?" You asked, inspecting the piece of his soul.
He nodded.
You looked at the shard.
Thinking back to what Alphys said, nervousness began to make your hands shake.
Should you take the risk and restore Gaster?
What would happen if you messed up?
You shook your head.
You'd have to be very careful and restore Gaster slower than you did previously, blinding others by accident wasn't something you wanted to relive with Mettaton.
"Mettaton, I'm going to need to concentrate to bring Gaster back so..." You started, looking away from him.
"You must be joking! Do you not care for your health at all, dear?" Mettaton said, putting his hands on his hips angrily.
Looking at him, you stood up straight, determined to help Gaster.
"I'm doing this, and I'm going to do it safely. I didn't know how to control my magic last time and let it flood out, but I won't make the same mistake."
Mettaton blinked, his hands covering his mouth, "Darling! Your determination is so dazzling, but I can't let you do this alone! I'll stand back here and watch, just in case something happens!"
Watching him spin dramatically down the hallway, at a far enough distance to still see you, made you want to laugh.
-but you had a job to do, and a particularly challenging one.
Would such a small shard of Gaster's soul be enough to reform the entire thing?
Pressing the soul between your palms and clasping your hands, you closed your eyes and focused on releasing your magic very slowly through the shard.
Rather than a blinding light filling the abandoned laboratory, it was a soft green light, emanating a gentle warmth through the darkness.
Before you knew it, the feeling of the shard was completely gone, cold stole-like hands wrapping around your warm ones.
"Humans truly are surprising creatures. Tell me, who are you?" Gaster asked, his hands leaving yours and wiping off his dusty lab coat.
You smiled, "Buttercup, adopted child of Toriel and Asgore. I fell down years ago and Toriel took me into her care."
Gaster nodded, looking around.
"This place is horribly filthy, let us depart. I'm assuming you know the way out?"
You nodded in return, turning to see Mettaton who's jaw practically almost his the ground.
"Wh- You actually did it?! Oh my!"
"Did you seriously think I couldn't do it?!" You replied, shocked to hear that Mettaton doubted you.
"Psh, of course not! Just- Anyways, let's get out of this place. It doesn't suit us at all!"
You laughed, leading the two back to the elevator, Mettaton's belt yet again lighting the way.
As the elevator doors opened, you could see Alphys, her arms crossed angrily.
"A-Are you done stressing me out you two! Just w-what were you thinking! Do you know what the conditions of the l-lab down there could do to your-"
Freezing, her arms unlocked from one another, adjusting glasses in shock.
