Outside I saw that Racer's bike was gone as were the others. Logan didn't say anything as he got into Nina's car with me. We were both large men and she drove a small Mazda. There was no space between us once we had closed the door. I went to put on my seatbelt.
"What are you doing?" he asked.
"Nina got mad at me the other day for not wearing my seat belt. I don't want to her be annoyed if I turn up without it on" I said.
"She does know you're a shifter, right?" he asked.
"She doesn't care, fights with her dad about it as well. Got angrier when I called Rory while driving" I said smiling.
"That I understand, especially when you have someone else in the car. Also, when all this is over you need to get her a bigger car" Logan said, shifting his weight trying to get comfortable.
"What, you aren't comfortable?" I tease him as I started to drive out of the lot. He gave me an unimpressed face. The drive was only short, and we paused for a moment at the diner as we both saw Tanner, Racer and Scout walk inside. Logan, with great difficulty, pulled out of the phone and called the station. Even though it might have seen prejudice to expect them to cause trouble. It was something that most people expected when they saw the Lion gang walk into their shop. I looked at Racer, thinking about what it was like for him growing up."Do you think Racer would have had a hard life?" I asked.
"With a female shifter as a mother and father who was killed for her acts. I think he would have had a shitter life than Grace," Logan said.
"I feel kind of sorry for him," I said. It was true. How could you expect a kid to turn out good when you had an up bring like that? A mother who was probably insane, violent and off the rails and then dealing with the trauma of your father's death. Even though our parents died when we were young, we had each other, and the support of the community. What kind of community was there in Kennelly? A place where most of the shifters earn money by illegal fighting and gambling. Did Racer ever have much hope of being anything else than what he was now? I tried not to think of that, there was nothing I could do about that. I just had to think that this man who difficult childhood was still a threat to my mate. That was something for Logan to think about and consider for when or if the time came to arrest him. I had to protect Nina; I shouldn't have left her alone here.
The aged care centre was still busy and when we walked in, I saw Elisa speaking with four other people. Laughing with little Isla on her hip. Logan walked over to her, but I ignored them both and went looking for my mate. I didn't understand how it could be so busy today.
Tobias' room was down the hall, which was empty. The sliding door to the gardens was open, but they weren't in any of the garden areas. The outside area of the aged care centre was massive, it had a garden, which had a lot of different trees and flowers. A games area, where I was playing chess with Tobias, but they weren't there. On the opposite side of the building, next to the land that they wanted to buy, was just a grass patch. Usually empty but today it had markets and food stalls, but they weren't there either. I started to worry, and I felt my bear starting to pace. Why weren't they here, Elisa told me that she could see them, but where are they now? I walked back inside thinking that they might be at lunch. The lunchroom was a large dining room with about ten tables, each sitting ten people. The room was full.
"What is going on here today?" I said to no one in particular.
"Elisa said it is seniors' day, a day where all the families are invited for a meal, games, and entertainment. To spend a day with their elderly loved ones who can't leave the nursing home." Logan said. I didn't even know he was next to me, and I wondered how long he had been following me.
