STRUMMING MY PAIN WITH HIS FINGERS
KILLING ME SOFTLY WITH HIS SONG

VANCE WAS HASTILY HEADING OUT TO THE SCHOOLS YARD, yet was unaware of the skittish girl trying to catch up to him.

"hey vance!"

the sudden outburst of noise that filled the once dull hallway caused the aggravated boy to focus his attention on y/n.

His gaze softened as he lay eyes on the girl. As if the tension and anger that feasted inside the boy melted away the second y/n was near. And it made vance sick, he was going for soft, for a
girl. He hated it.

Instead of responding to the girl he just tilted his head, offering the girl to go with him, wherever that may be.

Y/n shuffled her feet in a scramble to catch up to the boy.

"you know that was totally cool, but why were you and bruce fighting?" y/n asked curiously. Vance and Bruce hardly spoke so it was a mere mystery to y/n about what the could possibly be fighting about. Completely oblivious to the fact it was her.

"shockingly enough, You" Vance laid the tip of his pointer finger on y/n's shoulder as he sat the two of them down.

"me?!" y/n couldn't help but squeak out, with the way bruce was acting recently the thought of vance being willing to get into a fight due to her caused a release of butterflies in her stomach, Yet of course her brain reminded her she was flushed over the wrong boy.

"oh. um? You're roughed up huh?! i have stuff in my backpack for that, being a klutz and all" the girl bolted out her sentence in an incoherent mess. She was utterly overwhelmed and embarrassed.

Vance didn't mind. In fact he liked it. He thought she was cute, the way she was flushed crimson and became a rambling mess instead of her usually cooled demeanour was adorable to him.

Y/n made herself completely invested into bandaging vances bruised knuckles trying to
ignore the piercing stare that vance was giving off as he started down at her, admiring every single breath he took with her.

"hey. are we still on for the grab n go later?" Vance spoke with a lack of confidence in his voice which made y/n's head shoot up in shock due to the timidness of the hopper boy.

"yeah of course!"

3 hours later the two walked the streets navigating their way towards the grab n go.

The cool summer breeze pushed both y/ns and vances hair back into the calm of the air. Y/n was blabbering on about star wars and how vance should totally see it, the boy acted as if he would never be seen "watching such dorky movies" in his words yet secretly he also dorked out about the movie.

"no! you've got to watch horror movies. It's the only thing i like! ohh like flesh fest or scream, evelyn scream". vance was now the one 'dorking' about movies despite poking fun of y/n a few seconds prior.

"horrors the best but how is that the only genre you watch!" Y/n liked horror movies subjectively but despite how much she didn't like to admit it they scared the shit out of her.

"i've not watched much recently actually, olivia's face has provided enough scare for me" vance joked as he opened the cold class door for y/n.

y/n spat out a laugh and looked at vance with a grimace.

The AC running on high ran the girl cold, making her stroke her arms in hope of comfort yet another sight that protruded into her view was enough to run the blood inside the girl cold.

there her boyfriend stood in front of the slushy machine with his arms wrapped around olivia.

"he's a dick. i hope you know that" the boy bending down to reach y/n's ear yet she didn't murmurs to confirm what she already knew.

"look" olivia's sultry voice warned her new found play toy that y/n and vance stood behind them.

"so that's were you've been all this time? messing around with vance. It's bullshit y/n. mark told me he saw you run off with hopper but i didn't believe him, i shouldn't have been naive enough to trust you. You didn't even check on me" bruce spat out his battling words causing y/n to loose her mental footing

"bruce.. everyone was. i um i didn't know if you wanted me to crowd you" vance watched as the girl who was cheery just two minutes ago crumbled into an anxious and agitated. He hated it. The way he made her feel like nothing. He could treat her better.

"ohh yeah of course i wouldn't want my girlfriend to check on ME instead of running off with the boy i was fighting" bruce's words flew with sarcasm as he scoffed and laughed his way through his sentences.

"Listen man with your fucking stupid scoffing. Leave her alone. You do not fuck around with her anymore. What is wrong with you? Go fuck olivia instead of shitting on your girlfriend" Vance now placed his arm in front y/n pushing her back in a defensive manner.

"i'm breaking up with you y/n. I don't love you anymore you're so-" Bruce looked directly at y/n with cold eyes. Bruce was never like this, What happened to the sweet boy that once made her feel so safe.

Y/n tuned everything out at that point, she didn't want to know everything bruce picked apart about her.

"hey.. i'll walk you home. Let's go" vance lightly shook her shoulders with a soft near pity full tone. Y/n didn't want his pity but it wouldn't hurt to maybe be comforted once in her life. With
an older brother more invested in drugs and sports slowly following down his fathers path and of course her alcoholic, drug addicted, dead beat, abusive and a million more things dad, comfort wasn't a regular occurrence for her.

The walk home was mostly vance talking about anything but bruce from how he would survive jaws or even baseball, A sport he knew nothing about.

His voice was tranquil, he sucked y/n in. As they strode closer and closer to home y/n placed her head on vances shoulder.

The boy froze not knowing what to do. After a few stiff moments he placed his arms over y/n. He knew she needed comfort, How to give it? He had no idea, his sense of comfort was the comforting intimacy of alcohol or the warm hug from cigarette smoke.

"hey listen. I'll be here for you always. Look i'll take you to school tomorrow, you bike right? 7:10 i'll be there. You don't have to be alone"

those words gave better comfort then anything else had in the last 15 years for the girl.

"thank you. It means a lot. I hope you know me too. I can't fight like you but i'm always here" She smiled up at the boy.

"of course. It's what friends do" He murmured

friends. friends? why did that word stab and twist at her heart more then anything else. She just broke up with her boyfriend but why was she mourning that vance hopper only saw her a friend?

"goodnight y/n" Before she knew it she was home.

"yeah night vance".

huh. Friends.
