"IS MY MOTHER ALRIGHT?" Princess Cassandra asked.
She was outside her parents' quarters. Two royal guards were watching outside, along with the queen's chief lady-in-waiting, Lady Flemming.
The princess concluded her birthday party early when she heard about the queen's condition. It was supposed to be the lantern festival at the strike of 8, but they might need to postpone it.
"I wish to see my mother," she demanded.
"Your Highness, you will be allowed inside after Lord Allison checks on Her Majesty the queen," Lady Flemming said, bowing her head to the princess.
Princess Cassandra felt restless despite the assurance that her mother will be alright. Her mother had always had a weak constitution, but she had never seen or heard her fall from exhaustion.
After a few moments, the door to the royal couple's chambers was pushed open. Lord Allison was surprised to see the young princess standing in front of the door.
"I greet Her Highness, the princess," the royal physician greeted, but the princess ignored him.
Princess Cassandra took the chance to barge in her parents' quarters. Her heart was in pain as she saw her mother laying on the bed. She seemed to be in pain and in a weaker state than how she was earlier.
"Cassandra."
Her attention dropped on the king who was looking after her mother. Princess Cassandra frowned at him.
"What did you do to my mother?" She spat her words as if he wasn't the king of this kingdom, and her father.
King Frederic and the other servants in the room were surprised to hear how the princess spoke to the king. Princess Cassandra had always been a soft spoken young lady who carried herself with grace and elegance.
However, today was heartbreaking for her. Not only did the king not show up at her birthday banquet, but her mother also fell ill after visiting the king.
"I'm alright, my dear. Your mother just felt exhausted earlier," the queen assured her daughter.
The princess' tears were quick to fall on her cheeks when she heard her mother's sweet voice. "Mother, are you sick?" Princess Cassandra sat on the side of the bed as she looked at the queen closer.
Queen Arianna smiled as she reached for her daughter's cheek, comforting her. "I'm not sick, my dear. I'll be alright after a few days of rest," she assured her.
"I'll excuse myself for a while. I need to check the lantern festival," the king interjected.
There was that meaningful gaze between the king and the queen that Cassandra couldn't understand. Oddly enough, her mother didn't utter any words to her father before he left. This made her suspect that something did happen between them.
