chapter 16.

"hey beautiful, happy birthday" jj says as kie opens the door. she smiles and he hugs her. "thankyou" she says. "how you holding up?" he says, pulling back."with jim? alright, i guess" she says. "yeah" he says, taking her hand. she walks out of the door and locks the door, before walking down the porch. "you look nice by the way" kie says. "i thought i'd actually make an effort, for your birthday" he says. "well, you always look good. today you look smart-ish" kie says. "thanks for the, almost compliment?" jj says as they both get in jj's truck. "where we headed?" kie says. "you pick. it's your birthday. but we need to be at the chateau for 4" jj says. "okay" kie says.

"she's nearly here. get down, turn the lights off" sarah says. john b flicks the lights and everyone hides. the only sound is jj and kie's footsteps on the porch. "are they even here?" kie says. "they should be" jj says. "it's all dark" kie says as she opens the door. jj flicks the lights on as everyone jumps up. "surprise!". "jesus christ!" kie says. "happy birthday!" sarah says, running over to kie. they hug for a few seconds. "you were all in on this?" kie says. "yeah" jj says. "and you didn't blow it!? i'm proud of you" kie says. "yeah well sarah threatened us if we blew it" pope says. kie laughs. "people from school are on their way here too" sarah says. "okay" kie says. sarah hands her a gift bag and drags her to the sofa. "open it" she says. "okay okay" kie says. she opens it to see clothes. there's a couple of tops, and a dress. "they're lovely! thanks sarah" kie says, hugging her. "you're welcome!" sarah says, hugging her back. kie gets gifts from john b, pope, olivia and a few other people from the party, except for jj. she doesn't think too much of it though, since she knows he doesn't have much money. they're all outside, drinking and talking with other people that are here. they spend a few hours doing that, then jj and kie go inside for the last hour or so.

"so, how has your birthday been?" jj says. kie smiles. "good. great actually. glad i'm finally an adult" kie says. jj chuckles. "so, uh. i've been keeping this for a good time.. but i think now is a good time so.." jj says, pulling something out of his pocket. "it's not much, but i thought it would be great for you" jj says, handing kie a gold necklace with a moon pendant. "it's not as good as everyone else's presents-" shut up" kie cuts him off. he furrows his eyebrows. "it's.. great! i love it" kie says, hugging jj. "thankyou!" she says. she pulls back and kisses him before lifting her hair up. "can you put it on for me?" she says. "uh, yeah" jj says, taking the necklace. "jj! kie! someone's hear for you!" liv shouts through the door. "for us?" kie says, dropping her hair. they both get up and go over to the door, to see the person they both wanted to see the least.

"what are you doing here? you're not welcome" jj says. "just to wish kiara a happy birthday. plus, this is a party" melody says. "yeah, a one you weren't invited to" kie says. "ooh, damn. so you do talk? you've barely said two words to me since i met you" melody says. "because i don't like you" kie says. "melody, stop trying to ruin kiara's birthday and leave" jj says. "or what? you gonna get that bitch to punch me again?" melody says. "you're the only bitch here, melody" jj says. "i don't need to get sarah to punch you, i'll do it myself if you don't fuck off" kie says. "oh, threats now?" melody says. "why the fuck are you here!?" sarah says, storming over go melody. "relax, i'm just here to wish kiara a happy birthday" melody says. "wish-kiara-a-happy-birthday my ass!" sarah says. "you're just head to try and ruin things" john b says. "get out of here" sarah says. melody doesn't say anything. she just stares at jj. "does she know?" she says, gesturing to kiara. "does she know?" she repeats, gesturing to sarah. "don't you dare" jj says. "he's been lying to you, girls. both of you" melody says, turning to sarah and kie. kie rolls her eyes. "it's a shame we don't have any trust in you at all" sarah says. "melody, don't even, that's too far" john b says. kie furrows her eyebrows. "you know, if they were really that important to you, i would've thought you'd told them. best friend and girlfriend are pretty close relationships" melody says. "melody, stop" pope says. she folds her arms and steps closer to jj. "why haven't you told them, jay?". kiara can feel her blood boil, and before she even knows it, she's holding a fist full of melody's hair and yanking her out of the door. "get off of me you fucking bitch!" melody shouts. "get the fuck outta here!" kie shouts, throwing melody into the garden. everyone stops what they're doing and looks over. "that was.. unnecessary. i was just telling you, you should really rethink your whole relationship, since he hasn't told you" melody says, flattening her hair down. "oh and, kiara... happy birthday" she says before walking away. kie folds her arms and turns to the others standing behind her. sarah stands next to her, facing jj. john b and pope stand at either side of them.

"what was that about?" sarah says. "what?" jj says. "what aren't you telling us, jj?" she says. kie looks down. "what? nothing!? i- melody's just a bitch!" jj says. "yes, she's a bitch trying to stir the pot but she wasn't lying. from all your reactions she's telling the truth. there's something you haven't told us" sarah says. jj looks at kie, who avoids eye contact. "it's- it's nothing" jj says. "didn't seem like nothing" sarah says. "you're giving her what she wants! look! we're arguing now! because of her!" jj says. "stop" sarah says. jj sighs and runs his fingers through his hair. pope and john b stay quiet. "are you really gonna let her win here?" jj says. sarah shakes her head. "what are you not telling us?" she says. jj sighs again. sarah chuckles after a few seconds of waiting for a reply, and not getting one, and walks away. kie finally looks up and returns jj's look. "you can tell us. you can tell us anything" kie says. "there's nothing to tell" jj lies. "okay everyone let's go! party's over!" sarah shouts in the background. kie presses her lips together and nods. "come and find us when you're ready to tell the truth" she says before turning around and walking down the steps. sarah follows her, and they walk away, towards the streets of the cut.

"why didn't you just tell them?" john b says. "it's not the sort of thing i want to tell them" jj says. "they deserve to know" pope says. "i don't want them to look at me any different" jj says. "they won't. it wasn't your fault, jj. you didn't do it" john b says. jj sighs. "yeah but... think of how it looks" he says. "screw how it looks! they care about you, and they trust you. they'd understand. but you don't trust them" pope says. "i do trust them. like i said, i don't wanna scare them off" jj says. "oh my god, jj. you couldn't scare them off. like we said. they trust you" john b says. "exactly man. now you've gotta trust them" pope says.
