Chapter 10
"Jaime, how many times do I have to tell you that I can't give you any answers?" It had now been an hour and we both already finished our breakfast. I kept begging and begging Ron to tell me what the name meant to him, but he refused to answer. When I first said the name, he seemed to freeze for a moment, as if in shock, but he quickly recovered. I continued to ask throughout our meal, but he would divulge no answers.
"But why can't you answer me? Is it really that bad of a subject?" I looked straight into his warm brown eyes and silently pleaded with him to give me even the slightest answer. He let out a deep sigh and shook his head.
"Jaime... that name is not one you need to go mentioning to people around the castle. There is a lot of pain involved with that name, and a great deal of people would be very offended if you were to mention it. I'll just tell you- " He sighed and seemed to be contemplating what exactly he could tell me. "Well... Jaime, just know that no matter what, no matter what the situation happens to be, do not mention that name to Reuban." My head spun even faster when he spoke those words, why must there be question after question?
"Why Reuban? Is that name important to him?" I asked, hoping he would give me at least a small explanation. He only shook his head.
"I've already told you too much as it is. I'm sorry Jaime; I know this must be very frustrating for you." I only nodded in understanding as I chewed on my fingernails.
"Just two more questions, and I promise I'll stop annoying you. Well, at least for today." He nodded and smiled at me pityingly. "The other rooms down the left hallway, what are they used for?"
"Those are for the servants, everyone working here must have some place to sleep." He smiled at me and a grin spread across my face; finally some real answers.
"Okay, also there is a room in the foyer... umm; it's behind a small gray door-" I halted my question as a look of total shock overcame his features. His mouth dropped open and he stared at me quietly for a few moments.
"J-Jaime... did you see this door or was it that someone mention it to you?" He looked me up and down, not in a seductive way, more like he was looking for something that was missing.
"I-I saw it." His eyes widened, and his breath came out in short huffs.
"But that's impossible." I was beginning to fear he was going into shock as his eyes began to glaze over. I was afraid to mention the fact that I went inside the room, he might keel over in perplexity. After a few minutes of him trying to overcome the astonishment, he finally looked at me again.
"Jaime... do you believe in vampires?"
If anyone was giving an award for the most ridiculous question ever asked, Ron would win it hands down. I'd never seen anyone ask such a stupid question with such a straight look on their face. How could I possibly believe in vampires?
"Umm... Ron are you feeling sane? Of course, I don't believe in vampires." He continued to look at me with a quizzical stare. I held his gaze as he stared me down. After a few minutes of silence, he finally let out a sigh and began collecting our plates and forks.
"Oh well, I suppose it will just be another mystery." He stated with a smile before he walked out of the room, sending me one last confused look. I didn't understand him at all. Why would he be surprised about me seeing that door? Sure, the color textures did make it hard to notice at first, but it was just simply a door, a door anyone can see.
