Chapter 32
"M-Master?" Reuban stammered out as he gently released my waist. He instead rested his hand on my elbow to keep me upright.
"I came to discuss the issue with Alcibiades." The Master gave nothing of his emotions away with his iron tone.
"I'll call someone to help Jaime, so we can talk." Reuban began to move toward the door, but the Master held up his hand to halt him.
"I wish to speak with you both."
"Why me?" I blurted out imprudently.
"Because you are the one who caused this mess in the first place." His words hit me in an already sore area, and I shut up.
"It's not her fault." Reuban's voice intervened. It was the first time he spoke against the Master with an insolent tone. I could tell he surprised himself as his eyes widened.
"We all know that isn't true. Now, both of you have a seat." He gestured to the bed, and Reuban helped me stagger over. We sat down on the edge of the bed unceremoniously. "From the intel I have gathered, Alcibiades is being held in a werewolf pack a hundred miles past the forest."
"A hundred miles!" I exclaimed in horror.
"A little over a hundred actually." He replied simply. "I want you both to go retrieve him."
Silence followed this command as neither Reuban or I moved.
"You will leave immediately." Reuban swiftly got to his feet and crossed the few meters between him and the Master. He only stood a foot away.
"Master, that is an impossible demand. She will only slow me down. She will get hurt or killed. There is nothing to gain by bringing her along!" His speech was emphatic, and he was on the edge of hysteria. I'd never seen him so worked up before. I tried to ignore the hurt I felt at his words; he was right.
"Reuban, I actually believe there is nothing to gain from you going." Reuban's expression faltered. "The only reason you will accompany Jaime is to help her reach the compound. After that, you will stay away until Jaime retrieves Alcibiades."
"What?!" I finally jumped to my feet in protest. I ignored the stinging in my ribs.
"Sam, or Ron as you like to call him, trusts you. He will easily accept you into his home. You will find the right time and escape with Alcibiades." I felt pure terror at his words.
"I'm not capable of that! I don't trust Ron. I can't handle him. Besides, I'm too injured to leave tonight. Doctor Ren said I need to heal before he can remove my stitches." I tried to come up with any excuse.
In a blink, the Master was inches away from my face. He grabbed my neck with one of his stony claws and my right wrist with his other. After shaking off his horror, Reuban rushed over to us. He put his own hands on the Master's and tried to remove his death grip on my neck.
The Master didn't budge.
"Reuban, I'd give up now if I were you. I still control when you become King; I decide whether it will be one year or nine hundred years. I'd suggest you stay on my good side." I could see the battle raging behind Reuban's crystal eyes. A few long moments passed, until finally Reuban's arms dropped to his sides. He took a step back.
My heart broke.
"Jaime, you will obey my command either way. Since you assume your injury is too severe, we will have to treat it quickly." The Master released my arm and brought his wrist to his pale lips. In a swift flourish, he sank his fangs into his own flesh. Deep crimson pooled across his white flesh.
