Chapter 15

As a child, I was was considered an extreme tomboy. I would run around with the boys, climb trees, play "boy" sports like football and dodgeball, roll in the mud, and just be one of the gang. The thing I would mostly enjoy would be the act of swapping scary stories. I was always the person who never turned their head when confronted with an obstacle or fear; tales of murderers, ghosts, zombies, and even vampires could never curl my skin. I never displayed fear, not when I had such a bravado reputation.

Never before had I felt like such a coward than in this moment.

The exact second that the knowledge came to my ears that vampires were real, I ran. I ran from that room as fast as my legs would take me. I didn't look back as fear gripped my shaking body. I didn't look back, even though I felt more of a coward than ever before. In that moment, I didn't care how much of a coward I was. I was afraid, so I was going to run. My fight or flight response kicked into full gear. I didn't pay attention to where I was going. I didn't listen to hear if I was being followed; I just ran.

I found myself in the garden clutching my sides as the pain of exercise coursed through me. The light orange sun was nearly disappeared as it dipped low behind the trees. A yellow haze filled the field as I panted my way deep into the shrubbery.

A hiss behind me caused my body to swing around in perceptible fear. Vampires were real. Vampires, blood loving killers, existed among us on this earth. How could mankind not know something so tangible?

"Erikson..." The voice hissed again, causing me to burst out into another sprint of fear. I silently cursed myself for not being braver. I was giving this blood fiend the satisfaction of my fear: my humiliating defeat. My body wouldn't listen to my brain as it continued this futile chase. The garden got thicker as I strayed from the path into the nearby forest through trees and shrubbery. Leaves nicked at my face, branches gripped my clothes, and the grass stained my black converse. No turning back, the fear was too strong for me to face at this point. Fear consumed my whole body as the forest protested against my retreat.

"Jaime!" Maybe it was a miracle or perhaps I went into shock, but in that moment my whole body froze in its retreat. Jaime... my name on those lips seemed foreign.

Reuban's dark form emerged from behind me, his body showing no signs of a pursuit. His black T-shirt clung to his chiseled form, and his figure took a step closer. Reuban never before had addressed me by my first name; he chided me for even telling him my name. It shocked me completely that he would sink to the level of letting my dirty human name grace his perfect lips.

"Erikson, what are you looking to gain by attempting an escape in this direction? You can keep running this way for miles, or until your body shuts down in dehydration." He spoke with venom as he circled my unmoving form like a vulture. "I hear that when a human gets dehydrated, its body will slowly shut down as every organ struggles without water. Are you really wishing to test that theory?"

"I-I... no..." I couldn't seem to find my brain as he continued to circle around me.

Reuban was a vampire.

That fact dawned on me slowly as everything began to fall into place. The memories reverberated through my brain as I attempted to reach back into reality.

"Vampires are real Jaime."

They all had pale almost white skin, red eyes, and wore all deep black.
