~~~Once again, I'm ashamed to face you all for how slow I am at updating. I don't know if you realize this, but its been like a year *hiding my face in shame* I'll be honest, I stopped writing because this chapter was really freaking hard to get done. I got about 800 words in, and I had no idea where to go from there. In my typical fashion, this led to me writing nothing for a year. Now that I'm in my senior year of college, and working on my English Thesis, I finally have a strong enough reason to procrastinate from my responsibilities and work on this book again. I'm deeply sorry for the wait, and please feel free to judge me in the comments. On we go!
On a side note, I just became aware that this book is #6 in suspense on Wattpad! #6! Ya'll are awesome, and I want to cry.~~~
Chapter 39
The shower felt amazing, and I stayed under the warm current longer than usual. It helped to sooth my tense muscles and anxiety-driven headache. I followed Ron's instructions and left my dirty clothes on the bathroom floor. They were all torn up anyways.
The sight of the ripped-up jeans reminded me of Reuban.
I wondered what he was doing in the woods. Did vampires get cold? Was he able to fall asleep out there?
Once I reached my room, I collapsed onto the quilted twin bed and buried my head in the white woolen pillows. While I was snuggled up in a warm cozy bed, was Reuban outside curled up on the cold ground?
I shook my head to dispel the thought. Reuban was strong. He'd be okay.
Sleep found me quickly once the stress left my body. Tomorrow was another day. I would find Ali.
~~~A field spread before me like butter, and the grass between my bare toes felt like velvet. There was no end to the green expanse. The field stretched as far as the eye could see until it connected with the warm yellow haze of an evening sunset. I knew this was no ordinary dream; I felt the Master at my back.
"You're behind schedule, my dear Jaime." He spoke. I didn't bother to face him, and he came to stand beside me.
"What's the hurry?" I asked sarcastically. "Missing your favorite hostage?"
"The hurry comes at Alcibiades' expense."
"What do you mean?" I turned to him, alarmed. "The werewolves seem nice enough. I don't think they will hurt him."
"Dear, sweet, naive Jaime." I cringed at his words. "Alcibiades suffers from a rare disease called Sangue Debolezza. Fortunately, his case is not too severe, but he needs to be treated regularly or the disease will spread."
"What?! What does that mean?" I asked in horror.
"It means that he needs to be on a steady intake of specific blood. The consequences of missing a dose could be dire."
"Why didn't anyone tell me about this?"
"It wasn't pertinent for you to know." I clenched my fists.
"How is it not pertinent? I need to hurry and save him!"
"Yes, if you don't find him within the next two days you may be too late." I felt the blood drain from my face. Poor Ali.
"And... Reuban knows about this?" I asked.
"Of course; he is Alcibiades' family." I couldn't help but wonder why Reuban wasted so much time at the cabin. We should have never delayed while Ali was suffering!
"Does Ron know? He must not! He wouldn't have taken Ali if he knew. If I tell him, he will let Ali go!" The revelation was a weight off my shoulders. I knew I could convince him.
