Chapter 8
I spent the rest of the day downstairs with Ron. He was actually a pretty fun guy. He showed me how to make his special chicken soup, and we both ate together. Talking came naturally with him. We discussed the house and joked about the people we'd met.
I was glad he never asked about my personal life, such as why I wouldn't call him Sam. He didn't ask any personal questions, and I returned the favor in that respect. It was our unspoken agreement.
After we finished eating and cleaning the dishes, I couldn't help but let out a huge yawn.
"Wow, you look beat. I'll walk you to your room." He smiled at me and I nodded, naturally smiling back.
I managed to follow him up the steps and walk to my room without passing out, but just barely.
"Well, I guess I'll see you tomorrow Jaime. We can make a nice breakfast together." I smiled at him, and he leaned his face down to mine.
For a brief moment, when I thought he was going to kiss me, I was filled with unspeakable panic. I couldn't help but reflect on my last kiss, not including the uncontrolled hazy one I had with Seth. I reflected on the kiss that changed everything.
But Ron just laid a simple peck on my cheek, a gesture that I assumed friends could do.
"Goodnight Ron." I whispered before slipping into my room. I shut the door behind me and leaned back against it, closing my eyes.
The panic seeped out of me in waves as I let out a deep sigh. Ron was a good guy as far as I knew, he was potentially going to be a good friend. I shouldn't have panicked thinking he was going to kiss me. Ron seemed to be the only normal person in this house. I think without him, I would go crazy.
"Have a good time with that beast?" I jumped a foot in the air, and my eyes flew open. Reuban was standing in the middle of my room, staring at me with a vacant expression.
I hadn't even noticed he was there...
"Excuse me? He has a name you know, calling him a beast is rude and completely unnecessary. Besides, he-" Reuban interrupted my speech with a scoff, and he shook his head at me like I was wasting his time.
"I couldn't care less about that animal. I just came to see if you made it back alive, and since you did- get out of my way so I can leave." His eyes seared into mine with a burning intensity of anger. I froze in place, causing him to push me away from the door. I stumbled and landed on my butt, but he was already gone.
Why was everyone in this place so weird?
"I smell blood..."
