"I-In your room? What do you mean?"
I decided the innocent approach was the best plan for me right now. I couldn't see how he would know I'd been there. Maybe I left a book out of place and he noticed? I was certain I put everything in its right place! The only option I could think of was to act as if I knew nothing, then perhaps it woild all blow over. The angry glint in his eyes proved me wrong.
"Your scent was everywhere, so don't try to deny it. Besides, you left the balcony door open." I felt like a complete idiot as those words sunk in. I left the balcony door open? Thinking back, I couldn't clearly remember ever shutting it. Well, so much for being stealthy. I should have realized he would be able to smell me. Stupid vampire. "Well? Answer the question: what were you doing in my room?"
"I got lost."
"In my room?" It was beginning to really scare me the way Reuban's eyes held so much fury. He managed to keep his voice at a low calm level, but it was laced with pure ire.
"Well no, I didn't get lost in your room, but I was lost."
"So you just decided while you were wandering around, against the Master's orders, that you would enter my room uninvited and go through my belongings?" He finally snapped and let his anger seep out.
"I didn't go through your stuff!" The look on Reuban's face made me realize he probably smelled my scent on the desk too. "Okay, I went through your stuff."
"What's your excuse then, Erikson?" He took a few steps towards me, so we were only a foot apart.
"I was curious."
"Curiosity killed the cat."
"But satisfaction brought it back." I couldn't help it, I laughed. It was a small laugh, more like a deranged giggle, but I couldn't stop myself. The way Reuban tried to sound menacing while using that phrase was just hilarious. Our banter reminded me of toddlers arguing. The corners of Reuban's mouth twitched up in a smile, signaling to me that all was forgiven.
"Just... don't do it again." He let out a long-suffering sigh; his voice was softer now, once again returning to his bipolar ways.
"How did you get here before me? I only just left your room." It seemed impossible that I wouldn't have noticed him passing me by.
"Vampire speed, remember?"
"Wow, vampires are faster than I thought. You had to come another way though, right? I mean you didn't pass me and Alex."
"You were with Alex?" He gave me a speculative look as he studied my face. I couldn't see what he was looking for.
"Yeah... I bumped into him in the hallway. I really was lost, so he helped me get to my room. You do realize you avoided my question, right?"
"That was nice of him." He didn't sound sarcastic, just sincerely amazed.
"Now I know you're avoiding the question." A small frown stretched across my face. Sometimes talking to Reuban was like playing Ping-Pong; you have to always stay on guard because you don't know what he will throw at you next.
"I was only avoiding the question because it was stupid. I did pass you, you're just so unobservant that you didn't even notice." A silence fell over us as I stopped myself from sneering at him.
