Chapter Three

I woke up because of the bright light shining from the window. I groggily turned under the covers looking through heavy eyes for a clock. The digital clock read 5, but there was no way it could be that early. It was too bright! I extracted a hand from under my covers and fished around for my cell phone. My fingers finally curled around the familiar object and I flipped onto my back looking at the screen. 5:01.

I groaned, there was no way I would be able to sleep with this much light. I lay there watching the ceiling fan spin until I realized it was a pointless waste of time I could be using to explore. I rolled out of bed my bare feet gingerly touching the cold floor. I sat on the edge of the bed reluctant to leave the warmth and comfort. I then stood and stretched taking in the layout of my room.

The queen size bed had light blue and white paisley covers with satin white sheets. The walls were sea blue and on the wall next to the bed were large windows with white curtains complete with a white window seat. Next to it was a bookshelf full of many of my favorite books. I walked over and climbed on top of the window seat looking out at the Indian Ocean. The water sparkled calm and tranquil.

I opened the latch on the window frame and pushed it open. The warm ocean breeze came rushing in flooding the air around me with its sharp sweet tang. I reveled in it welcoming the new day as I finally woke up.

I looked down at my phone. Two missed calls. Who.. oh shit I needed to call my parents before they started freaking out. I pressed one on speed dial, too late I remembered the cost of international calling. I would just have to keep this brief and call back in the evening.

"Preeti?"

"Mama."

"Did you reach fine? How is everything? No problems right?"

"Yeah mama everything is fine. It's so beautiful and everyone has been so nice so far. I think I'm really going to like it here."

"Oh, that's good. Bujji, you are sleeping fine right, not too much jet lag?"

"Well, considering it's five in the morning, I think I have some jet lag. But don't worry, I'll be fine."

"Alright, here your dad wants to talk to you."

"Wait mom.." I sighed waiting as the phone changed hands.

"Preeti?"

"Hey daddy. Yeah I'm fine. No, no problems. Yeah everything went smoothly. I'm fine really. No wait..." and the phone was passed along to my sister.

"Hey Didi!"

"Hey baby, miss me yet?"

"Yeah, how are you? How was the flight? Any good movies?"

"One question at a time! Good. Fine. Nope. But hey I need to talk to you later I'm calling on my cell phone. I'll call back tonight alright."

"Okay, bye!" and she hung up before I had a chance to reply. I chuckled, what was I going to do with that impulsive girl.

I got up and walked to where I saw a doorway I imagined must be for the bathroom. Then realizing I probably needed a toothbrush, I backtracked to where my suitcases were neatly placed by the closet. I opened the carry on and pulled out my bag of toiletries, and a pair of workout clothes.

I walked into the bathroom which was just as open as the rest of the house, but thankfully its only window was high up, serving as natural light.

I pulled out my toothbrush and vigorously scoured my teeth. I stared at myself in the mirror. My reddish-black hair was tied back in a messy ponytail with little wisps sticking out as evidence of my recent slumber, my light brown eyes were still a light sleepy.
