looking up from my phone, i walked through the school gates. summer had just ended, and it was the first day of senior year. the school looked the same as last year with its spacious football field and steps leading up to the front doors. people were gathering with their friends to catch up and share stories from summer break. and the normal couples taking selfies per usual. i can't relate....

summer break had felt so short despite all the things i did with sunhee and matthew. the daily arcade visits, binge watching dramas (and crying), and going on a trip to japan.

i walked up the steps and was instantly attacked by sunhee and matthew.

"we missed you! why do you walk so slow?" sunhee complained

"wow, hello to you too. matthew how was your trip to canada?"

"it was fun! i did a lot of shopping, i got you guys something."

sunhee and i gasped and matthew pulled out three matching sanrio keychains from his backpack.

"the my melody one is for minji, the kuromi one is for sunhee, and the pompompurin one is for me!"

"awww thank you!" i exclaimed.

soon after, the bell rang and we split up to go to our classes. everyone was sitting in seats next to their friends when the teacher arrived.

"hello everyone, i am your teacher, mrs. lee. how was everyone's summer break?"

"good" the class replied in unison.

"i'm happy to hear that. i'm sorry to disappoint you guys, but there will be assigned seating. everyone stand up and i will call out the seat partners."

"first, choi yeonjun and choi beomgyu" mrs. lee said as she gestured towards two seats.

the two friends excitedly moved to their seats.

"jang wonyoung and park sunghoon"

"sim jaeyun and yang jungwon"

"huening bahiyyih and hong eunchae"

"han minji and shen ricky"

i sighed as i sat at my new seat.

i zoned out as mrs. lee continued listing the partners.

at 12:15pm, i headed to the cafeteria for lunch. today's menu was kimchi fried rice and tofu miso soup. i lived in the states for a little bit while i was younger and let me tell you, i have never been so happy with a school lunch. i looked around the cafeteria to find sunhee and matthew waving at me. i ran over to the table and sat down.

"soooo, how did class go for you guys?" sunhee asked.

"it surprisingly went really well. i'm next to kim sunoo again, but he's a really nice friend!" matthew responded.

"wow...i wish i could relate. shen ricky" i sighed.

"oof that suckssss" matthew laughed.

"the jocks are always so annoying and weird, especially that park gunwook" sunhee complained.

the most popular friend group in the entire school is and has always been the basketball team. eight boys: shen ricky, park gunwook, kim gyuvin, han yujin, sung hanbin, zhanghao, kim taerae, and kim jiwoong. ricky and gunwook were especially close because they were childhood friends. however, unfortunately, my friends and i never really understood the hype. they were your basic popular guys.

"good luck with ricky..." matthew said, patting my shoulder.

"i'm gonna need it"
