chapter twenty

~ the next day ~

it was the night before the exam and i had been studying for hours. i sat at my desk with a dim lamp illuminating my paper, the rest of the room dark. i flipped over my phone screen to see the time. it was currently 1:43am.

i widened my eyes at how late it had gotten.

wow, no wonder i'm so tired. i've been studying for six hours straight.

i finished writing my answer to the last question on the page and flipped to the next. thankfully, i was on the last section of my math study guide. i looked down that the first problem and froze. what. was. i. looking. at.

i scanned the next few pages and began getting dizzy. when had we even learned this?? everything i was looking at was completely unfamiliar. how was i supposed to get a good score on the exam if i didn't know how to do anything in an entire section??

my test anxiety quickly increased and i instantly began researching the topic. i had to be perfect at this by the morning if i wanted to be even close to acing it.

i began learning the strategy and practicing over and over and over again. i was so stressed out that my head might've just burst.

i bet i'm the only person still studying at this hour.

well if minji had actually made that bet, she would've lost a lot of money. on the floor below her, i sat at my desk, studying my notes for what felt like the billionth time.

i was practically torturing myself, i never study this much for a test. but i had to, for her.

i couldn't possibly pass up an opportunity for a wish. so here i was, pathetically studying over and over, just for a girl.

"are you STILL awake??" gunwook croaked, appearing at my open door.

"oh yeah, sorry, did i wake you up?" i asked.

"i can hear you rustling around and flipping pages all the way on the other side of the wall." he said, eyes barely open.

"sorry..."

"good for you but like, why are you studying so much?? you never do this."

"no reason..."

"hmm are you sure it doesn't have anything to do with a 5'5 brown eyed girl whose best friend is my girlfriend...?"

"no..."

"ah okay then, sure. by the way, any reason why you've been eating an excessive amount of strawberries lately?" gunwook pointed out, looking towards the bowl on my desk.

i turned towards my picture with minji, displayed on my wall, and smiled.

"i just like them"

6:30am

my head shot up at the sound of my alarm. i looked at my surroundings and realized i had fallen asleep on my desk while studying. great.

i quickly got up and dressed myself. i had fallen asleep last night around 4:00am and i was extremely exhausted. i could barely keep my eyes open. there was no way that i would survive the day running on two and a half hours of sleep.

i splashed my face with water in attempt to wake myself up. after i finished preparing myself for class, i sat at my desk once again to study while waiting for sunhee. the last thing i remembered was opening my textbook before knocking out again.
