sunhee and i hurried to the center of the campground, running as quickly as our shoes allowed us. the teachers had previously informed us that everyone had to meet in the main area by 8:45am and we were running a bit late. once we arrived at the spot, the crowd was loud, chattering about their first night here.
"SUNHEE!!" gunwook exclaimed, waving in our direction with bright eyes.
we walked over, too exhausted to continue running.
"what do you think we're doing today?" i asked the group, looking around at everyone.
"whatever we're doing, i just hope i'm with gunwook!" sunhee cheered.
ricky and i fake gagged at the comment, shuddering.
"please stop. i'm actually about to throw up right now..." ricky responded.
people began to quiet down as a teacher with a megaphone cleared her throat.
"hello students! i hope you're all enjoying the trip so far!"
the crowd cheered in excitement.
"today we have an activity planned for you. before anyone asks, it is required and we WILL notice if you are skipping. we are going to be doing PARTNER COMPETITIONS! everyone will get into one of the lines to get a random number and the person with the same one as you will become your partner for the day! NO SWITCHING PARTNERS! we want you to socialize with people other than your friends,"
everyone slightly groaned as they formed five lines. students chaotically ran around the area in search of their matching number.
"i got 50! please tell me that one of you guys got that too..." sunhee pleaded.
"nope... i have 192" i responded.
"ayyyy we're partners!" gunwook exclaimed to me.
"ugh i got 74, c'mon sunhee let's go find our partners" ricky complained.
sunhee hugged gunwook goodbye, catching up with ricky.
"did those girls in your cabin leave you guys alone?" gunwook asked.
"yup, i guess you guys really scared them off" i teased, "you're down BAD for sunhee."
"why don't we talk about you and ricky?" he said with a smirk.
"what-"
luckily, i was saved from the embarrassing topic by the teacher's voice cutting me off.
"has everyone found their partner? if you're still looking, go to mr. choi and he will help you. anyway, if you have found your partner come with me to our first competition."
the enormous crowd of teenagers unenthusiastically shuffled towards the lake. at the sight of canoes, many girls groaned realizing that they would have to risk their dry hair and perfected makeup.
once everyone arrived at the lake, the teacher shouted "pairs 1-200 stay here with me, and pairs 201-400 go with mr.choi for a scavenger hunt."
half the students cleared out and i searched for ricky in the crowd before turning my attention to the teacher who began explaining, "this will be team one, and mr. choi's group is team two. each pair will earn points based on how well they perform or how far they get in each activity. the pair with the most points from each team will compete for a secret prize."
many guesses of the prize were thrown out as she finished.
"is it money?!"
"is it food??"
"i bet it's something lame!"
"gunwook what do you think it is?" i asked turning to him.
"i have no idea"
