When Paves stepped through the Mirror holding her blue-eyed, blonde baby boy, I thought my heart would shatter. I was never made to withstand loss, yet now I seemed to swim in it.

Then, when Athern and I landed in Orion, I broke down in the throne room as I told Hathe his son had left the Realm. I screamed that night in my chambers, sobbing and calling out to Alarithe and praying she'd appear, though she never did.

A wet nose touched my arm. "Ferrin!"

The large wolf stood beside me, her soft fur touching my arm.

"She told me you were upset." Athern had just appeared in my sitting room doorway, staring down at me. "Get off the floor."

"I am perfectly happy here, thank you very much."

"A blind man could see that you are anything but happy." He joined me on the ground, squinting at Ferrin as she nudged her way between us. "I have spoken to Hathe, and he has said that we may stay in Orion for as long as we would like, even if all the other gods leave. We need only go to your land when your mother dies."

"Then we will remain here for a while yet."
