Owen found Paxton in the hall talking with a nurse after he left Kai's room. "Hey, can I pull you away for a moment?"
Paxton nodded and told the nurse they'd talk later, then she walked off. "What's up? Did you get him to talk?"
"He wouldn't shift." Owen pulled out his phone and showed Paxton the photo of the lab. "But when I showed him this photo he got agitated and laid back down."
Paxton shook his head. "Owen. He's dangerous. He's traumatized and scared, you can't do things that might trigger him. You saw what he did to Amy because the collar was hurting him."
"He won't hurt me."
"How do you know that? He's unpredictable at best."
Owen shoved his phone back into his pocket. "He's calmer with me. He wouldn't even let Amy touch him until I was beside him. He's fine with me, for some reason I don't know. But that's not the point."
"Then what is?"
"I needed to know if he spent all his time in his room. He recognized the photo of the lab, so he must've spent time in there."
"Meaning he might know what they were doing."
"Exactly. If I can get him to shift back, I think I can get him to talk to me. I just need to continue to build trust."
Paxton studied him for a moment. "I've never seen you this willing to spend time with anyone you don't know. What's changed?"
Owen didn't know how to answer that. "I- I don't know. He's just... fuck, I don't know I just feel like I have to help him."
Paxton raised one eyebrow but accepted that as answer. "Well, the next thing we can do is wait for the results of his tests."
As if thoughts has summoned her, Amy came up to them holding a clipboard. "We need to talk."
Amy took them down the hall to a more secluded area where no one else was lingering. Paxton, who was her mate, gave her a quick kiss before letting her talk. "What's wrong?"
"I just did Kai's blood test. It is strange to say the least. All of his levels are within range for a werewolf, but his DNA is what is interesting." She handed Paxton the clipboard. "He's got the strands for both an alpha and an omega."
Owen looked at her, surprised. "That guy is an omega? No fuckin way. Have you seen him?"
"I know." She shook her head slightly. "I've never seen this before. I don't even know if it's happened. I have no idea how this correlates to his size or whatever was going on in the warehouse but it's weird."
Paxton handed her back the clipboard. "This just keeps getting stranger and stranger."
Owen sighed. "Did you run his DNA to see if you could find a match? Maybe to tell us who he is?"
"I didn't find anything on him, but I did find a familial match." Amy flipped to a different page on the clipboard. "A sister, it looks like. She was beaten within an inch of her life and shortly after she was emancipated. She's been living in the next town over since she was sixteen."
"So it's safe to assume their father is running this thing and he's an asshole."
"I wouldn't rule it out. Her DNA has familial matches but other than that, she could be human. I could barely find any werewolf strands." Amy tucked her clipboard under her arm. "Her names Alice. She's on her way."
Paxton looked at her in alarm. "Amy, she could be working for her father!"
Amy put her finger up to the alpha and shut him up instantly. "Her father beat her and her brother. I doubt she likes him. She is his sister and it is my job to make sure the families of my patients are notified when they are in here. So don't start."
