Owen scooped a ladle full of soup into a bowl and placed it in front of Kai with a spoon. Kai sniffed it and frowned. "What is it?"

"Soup. It'll be easy on your stomach." Owen didn't think he'd be able to eat actual food easily since he'd been eating army rations for his entire life. Alice explained that she'd been sick her first few months away from the warehouse and he didn't want to shock Kai's body with something too complex. The soup was simple and would hopefully stay down easy.

Owen put the lid back over the pot and turned around. "I'm going to go take a shower, alright? Eat slow so you don't burn your tongue."

Kai nodded, but he was still staring at the food when Owen walked into the bathroom and closed the door.

He leaned over his counter and looked into the mirror. He looked like shit. His hair was ruffled and sticking up at weird angles, and he had giant bags under his eyes. There was dirt in the places he hadn't been able to wipe with baby wipes in the hospital bathroom, and both the cuts on his face and collar bone were bruised.

Owen sighed and started to take off his clothes. He could hear Kai clinking his spoon against the bowl in the kitchen, so at least he knew he was eating. He didn't want to leave him alone for too long, so he turned the water on and let it warm up while he brushed his hair.

He didn't know why, but he felt like he needed to stay with Kai. Like he'd freak out if he was left alone. He probably wouldn't, but Owen was usually one to worry. He was growing fond of the wolf and didn't want him to be uncomfortable or scared. He was in a new place, after all.

Owen showered quickly and towel dried his hair before he went through the door connecting the bathroom to his room to get dressed. He hung his towel back on the rack in the bathroom before heading back into the kitchen. Kai was sitting in front of his bowl, which was now empty.

"How did you like it?"

"It was good." He watched Owen as he took the bowl and rinsed it in the sink. "I've never had soup before."

"Well, this is just one kind of soup. There are a lot." Owen turned and leaned against the counter. "Do you want to try some more kinds for dinner in the next few days?"

He nodded slowly. Owen noticed he was always quiet and slow with his movements. Unless he felt threatened, of course. It was like he was afraid to startle anyone.

"Then we'll have more soup. I know how to make quite a few. You want to go take your shower now?"

He nodded again. "What about my clothes?"

Owen frowned. His pants were filthy and probably beyond saving. "Just leave them on the floor in there. I'll put some new ones by the door for when you're done, alright?"

"Okay." He stood up and walked into the bathroom, but didn't close the door. "How does this work?"

"Turn the knob to the left and the water will turn on and get warm. Towels are under the sink."

The only indication that Kai heard him was the sound of the cabinet opening and closing again.

To his surprise, Kai didn't close the door before turning the water on. He walked towards the bedroom to get him some clothes and caught a glimpse of him starting to take his pants off, which made him turn his head the opposite direction and blindly shut the door to give him some privacy.

Shaking off nearly seeing him naked, Owen rummaged through his dresser to find anything that would fit Kai. He was a big guy, but Kai was bigger and he didn't have much that might fit him. He finally managed to find a pair of sweatpants with stretchy fabric and a shirt that was very baggy on him that could work. He left them folded by the bathroom door.
