The first hero arrived when the windows started cracking.
Not for Dad.
Not for Papa.
For me.
I felt it before I saw them — the way the air thickened, like oxygen was turning into fuel. My flames weren’t out yet, not fully, but the heat had weight now. It pressed into the walls, warped metal, curled paint away from corners.
“Back away from her,” someone ordered.
I didn’t know who.
I didn’t care.
Father was still yelling — words sharp, desperate, ugly — and every syllable scraped against something raw inside me.
Papa’s hands were on my arms, grounding but burning where they touched.
“Ash,” he said again, firmer. “You’re slipping.”
“I know,” I whispered.
Blue fire crawled along my skin, then deepened — not brighter, but heavier. Red bled into it like ink in water. The temperature spiked. Someone shouted. A hero’s visor fogged instantly.
“She’s escalating,” another voice said. “Get suppressors—”
“No,” Dad snapped. “Not yet.”
More heroes poured in. They formed a half-circle instinctively — distance, spacing, calculated fear. None of them attacked. None of them reached for Dad.
All of them watched me.
“She’s a kid,” someone muttered.
“She’s a weapon,” someone else answered.
My flames answered for me.
The floor beneath my feet blackened like my flames, but didn’t melt. The fire wasn’t destroying — it was claiming. It rose behind me like wings made of heat, taller than I was, bending toward the ceiling like it wanted out.
Then a voice cut through it.
“Ash.”
Katsuki.
He didn’t shout. He didn’t curse.
He just said my name.
Izuku was beside him. Hitoshi. Shoto. Himi.
They walked straight through the heat like it didn’t scare them — like I didn’t scare them.
My flames hesitated.
“Ash,” Himi said softly, stepping closer. “Look at me.”
I did.
“You’re here,” she continued. “You’re not burning the world. You’re just scared.”
My fire flickered.
Blue crept back in, fighting through the red.
Water slammed down from above — controlled, precise, freezing. Steam screamed into the air. My flames hissed, resisted, then died back against my skin.
