( CHAPTER FORTY: TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS ) August, 1993
❝ Who you callin' uptight? ❞

Devon had to admit, he was on a roll. First, he stars in not one, but two music videos with Salt N' Pepa—Shoop and Whatta Man— and the ratings go through the roof. Next, he creates a killer song with Tupac Shakur, and it matches the magnetic energy of Breakthrough. And now? Well, lets just say that Devon Emmet was adapting well to the life of a lead actor. He was getting immersed in the process of movie-making.
Arriving to set at the break of dawn, reading the script, getting into hair and makeup and then doing the scene. Oh, and did Devon mention he was also co-directing this thing? Well, he was, which meant that he was spending as much time behind the camera as he was in front of the camera. There were so many components that Devon was involved in, and unlike his first day on set, where he was overwhelmed with all the new responsibilities, now, his workaholic brain was adjusting to the tasks— and thriving.
A couple weeks had passed, and Devon was, like he said, on a roll.
And right now, it was good that he was in his element. It was early in the morning, and Devon and TJ were patiently waiting in front the designated gate in JFK airport. Devon had to be on set later that day, but he simply had to be there in person to catch Janet when her flight lands. Apparently, the singer wasn't joking when she said she'll visit him in New York. Nearly a month of being apart, and they were finally going to see each other in the flesh again. To say that he was excited was an understatement.
"Got the camera ready?" Devon questioned, glancing at TJ excitably. The shorter man nodded, diligently videoing the gate as passengers disembarked the Los Angeles flight, making sure to capture Janet's entrance on camera. Devon told his friend that he wanted to film everything she did. He was a man in love, which meant that he wanted to emblazon his lover's every move, so that the memories would be with him forever.
So, as the pair of friends watched the crowd of passengers exiting the gate, Devon Emmet's eyes rummaged through the crowd, anticipating Janet Jackson's arrival. Eventually, it wasn't long before she came into his line of sight. Devon noticed her caramel brown locks first, seeing that it was lazily hidden by a hat. Next, Devon saw her face. She was wearing a pair of shades, her signature boots and a simple white shirt.
Her small body struggled to drag her rather large suitcase across the floor, and Devon could tell that she was trying to move through the airport unnoticed. The consequences of fame. But Devon saw her, and he recognised her immediately. Without any kind of hesitation, Devon rushed over to her, sneaking skidding across the floor as he practically sprinted over to his girlfriend.
