My friend, Hisan Uswat Rahman (may Allah preserve him and increase him in knowledge) whom I deem to be stronger and more knowledgable than me in Tafsir and Arabic wrote to me explaining the word 'Rabb' (رَبّ) in our native language Bangla:
"The word 'Rabb' is usually translated as Lord or Nurturer or Owner etc. However, in Arabic, the word 'Rabb' has a very broad meaning to it. Its meaning is difficult to express in one word in Bengla.
The word Rabb has several meanings in Arabic:
-Owner of something. That is, one who owns something. For example- if someone has a pen, he is the owner of that pen.
{However, the word Rabb is to be said with reference to any object in the case of people. For example- Rabb of the house, Rabb of the book, etc. It can only be used without anything in the case of Allah.}
-Another meaning of the word 'Rabb' is Authority. It may be easier to understand if we notice how it is used. When Yusuf (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was in prison, two people asked him for an interpretation of their dreams. One of them had a dream interpretation that he would make his 'Rabb' (in this case the King of Egypt) drink wine. He (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) even told him to speak about him to his 'Rabb'. Again the Hadith mentions that one of the signs of Doomsday is that the maidservant will give birth to her 'Rabbah', which comes from the word 'Rabb'.
-Another meaning of the word 'Raab' refers to someone who magnifies something. A better definition is that, one who fixes and completes something. For example- if you grow a tree or a person etc.
- Another meaning of the word 'Raab' is Gift Giver.
- Another meaning of the word 'Raab' is Maintainer, Guardian etc. That refers to someone who maintains and protects and provides.
So we can see that, it is very difficult to express the meaning of 'Raab' in a Bengla word. But keeping these in mind the word 'Raab' can be used."

['রব' শব্দটাকে সাধারণত প্রভু বা প্রতিপালক বা মালিক ইত্যাদি হিসেবে অনুবাদ করা হয়। তবে আরবীতে আসলে 'রব' শব্দটা খুবই ব্যাপক। এর অর্থ বাংলায় এক শব্দে প্রকাশ করা মুশকিল।
রব শব্দটার আরবিতে কয়েকটা অর্থ হল:
-কোন কিছুর মালিক। অর্থাৎ, যার মালিকানায় কোন কিছু আছে। যেমন কারো কোন কলম থাকলে সে সেই কলমের রব।
{তবে রব শব্দটা মানুষের ক্ষেত্রে কোন বস্তুর উল্লেখসহই বলতে হয়। যেমন ঘরের রব, বইয়ের রব ইত্যাদি। শুধুমাত্র আল্লাহর ক্ষেত্রে কোন কিছু ছাড়া ব্যবহার করা যায়।}
-রব শব্দের অন্য অর্থ কর্তৃপক্ষ। এর ব্যবহার দেখালে হয়তো বুঝতে সুবিধা হবে। ইউসুফ (আ.) যখন কারাগারে ছিলেন, তখন দুইজন তাঁর কাছে তাদের স্বপ্নের ব্যাখ্যা চায়। তাদের একজনের স্বপ্নের ব্যাখ্যা ছিল যে সে তার 'রব'-কে (এক্ষেত্রে মিশরের বাদশা) মদ পান করাবে। এমনকি তিনি (আ.) তাকে বললেন যেন সে তার 'রব'-এর কাছে তাঁর কথা বলে। আবার হাদীসে এসেছে যে কিয়ামতের একটি লক্ষণ হলো যে দাসী তার 'রাব্বাহ'-কে প্রসব করবে, যা রব শব্দের থেকেই আসে।
-রব শব্দের আরেক অর্থ হলো যে কোন কিছুকে বড় করে। আরো ভালো সংজ্ঞা হলো যে কোন কিছুকে ঠিক করে এবং পূর্ণতা দান করে। যেমন কোন গাছকে বড় করলে বা কোন মানুষকে ইত্যাদি।
-রব শব্দের অন্য অর্থ উপহারদাতা।
-রব শব্দের অন্য অর্থ রক্ষণাবেক্ষণকারী, প্রতিপালক ইত্যাদি। অর্থাৎ, যে রক্ষণাবেক্ষণ করে।
তাহলে আমরা দেখতে পাচ্ছি যে রব শব্দের অর্থ একটা বাংলা শব্দে প্রকাশ করা খুবই দুরূহ বিষয়। তবে এইসব মাথায় রেখে রব শব্দটি ব্যবহার করা যায়।]
