I love being a mother. Wouldn't trade it for the world.
But being mom to boys is something I didn't know my heart needed.
Don't get me wrong, I love having a daughter; a mini me. I spend my free time on the phone with Flavia while she's away at school and when she comes home we have a girls day.
But my boys have the love that they don't show, but as a mother you feel it.
I'm in the kitchen, preparing for dinner. Dayton and Quincy are in here, on their phones.
They're teens so they're starting to dislike my affection and are starting to go out more, talk about their love interests, want privacy. Which I respect.
"What's going on tonight?" I ask the boys.
"Nothing. What's on with you and dad?" Quincy asks
"We're watching a movie. Thought you guys would be out again," I say
"Can we join you?" Dayton asks
"Sure." I look at my two big teens and they're both completely focused on their phones. "And girls? Guys?"
"Not really," Quincy answers
"What you fucked half the school and now you don't know who to go after?" Dayton mumbles
"Quincy," I warn before he could even think about replying to his brother. "Dayton what your brother does in his extra curricular isn't something you need to put on blast. Plus you have no room to talk since your little celebration cake a few months ago."
"How?!" Dayton gasps and Quincy starts laughing.
"We have cameras," I answer, pointing to the many cameras in the kitchen with my knife.
A few months ago the boys friends came over with a cake. We can hear and see everything pretty clearly from our cameras.
Their friends had put "No longer a virgin" on the cake before congratulating Dayton.
"It's not a big deal, Day. You're 17. Just ask your dad to buy you condoms, not me. I'd cry," I say,
"And do your shit in the pool house. Not in my house. The pool house is for you guys, do your shit in there.""Yes, ma'am," The say in unison.
I go back to cutting my vegetables and putting them in a pot to boil.
As I walk around the kitchen both Quincy and Dayton move from standing against the counter, to sitting on the floor.
"Why don't you boys sit on the stool?" I ask
"We're good here, mom," Dayton answers.
"Ok." I smile.
I'd do anything for these moments every evening. Damien and I come home and the boys are gone out or gone to practice or to study group. They get home; they eat and shower before going back out. They come home at curfew and by then I'm out like a light.
Usually on a day when they both don't have practice, they're out all night with their friends and buy food for themselves. I still cook enough, because they come home hungry.
I hear the garage door open and in walks my husband.
"Hi, gorgeous. I missed you," Damien says with a smile as he walks into the kitchen.
"I seen you four hours ago." I roll my eyes as he comes up behind me, kissing my cheek.
"I can't miss my wife? Four hours ago I was with Ms. Nelson. Now I'm with Mrs. Carvelli... Boys!" Damien beams when he turns around. "Why are you on the floor? We have stools behind the island."
