CHAPTER FIVE
Living In The Real World

Lisa had offered for Eve to go to the hospital and observe, but Eve refused it the second the words came out. She did not like hospitals, and in all honesty, she avoided them, despite being one of the most reckless people on the planet. Instead, Eve stayed home, watching tv lazily.

Eve should have been happy. She got what she wanted, to be out of school. The problem was that most jobs required at least a high school diploma. She heard a knock on the door, and instead of being concerned for her safety, she said, "it's unlocked. If I know you come in, if I don't know you, go away."

May walked in. "Come on. Let's go. Your mother told me to keep an eye on you, and I might need help." May told her.

Eve knew there was no fighting May on this, and she didn't really want to find out the result of arguing with May Parker. Eve was kicked out of the kitchen within five seconds of standing there. She might have caused spaghetti sauce to spill on the floor by accident.

"Hey." Peter greeted, smiling when he saw Eve sitting on the couch.

"Eve's staying for supper." May informed him.

Peter looked at the floor in confusion. "Was there a murder?" He asked, referring to the sauce on the floor.

"No. Eve is kicked out of this kitchen right now. She spilled the already made sauce. I'm making spaghetti and meatballs tonight." May replied, chopping vegetables.

"You're serious? Spaghetti and meatballs." Peter asked.

"Since when don't you like spaghetti and meatballs, huh? Eve, you can come back to the kitchen now if you want." May said, turning around.

Eve watched May's face turn into shock. She wasn't sure why. "Oh, my god!" May exclaimed.

"What's up?"

"What happened to your face?" May questioned.

"Oh, I'm alright." Peter responded, causing Eve to walk up to him.

She crossed her arms. "Really? 'Cause you don't seem alright."

"I'm fine... and should you really be questioning me? You get into fights all the time." Peter said to her.

"That's different." Eve replied. "Wait, you got into a fight?" She questioned.

"Just... I fell, skating." He lied.

Eve rose an eyebrow, knowing damn well it was a lie.

Ben grunted while carrying a box. "Ben Parker, don't you even think about leaving that filthy box in my kitchen." May threatened.

"These are my bowling trophies." Ben defended.

"Oh. Then, by all means, please leave that filthy box in my kitchen." May sarcastically responded.

Eve and Peter hid their laughter at their interaction.

Ben looked at Peter. "What happened to you?"

"He fell." May answered.

"Why you kids ride those things, I'll never know. 'Cause it's stupid and dangerous. Remember when we were stupid and dangerous?" Ben asked May.

"No."

"Trust me, we were." Ben told Peter and Eve.

"I'm sure you were." Eve responded, drinking from the glass of milk.

Peter chuckled. "Good to know. Hey, where's the flood?"

"Follow me. I'll show you." Ben said.

"You serious?"

"Yes." Ben answered.

"Alright." Peter muttered.

"Have fun." Eve told him, getting a playful glare from Peter.

"He did not get hurt from falling off a skateboard." Eve told May.

May turned to face Eve, who was now sitting on the counter. "How are you doing?"

"May, I'm fine." May shot her a look. "Really! I've been working on art stuff finally." Eve left out the part about being a part-time vigilante.

Eventually Peter came back up, talked about his dad's briefcase that he found. Eve followed Peter upstairs to his room. She sat on the floor in front of Peter.

"Who hurt you?" She asked.

"Flash."

Eve looked at him, ready to say something.

"I swear I'm okay. Besides, you lie about being okay all the time." Peter reassured her.

"That's because I get hurt mostly from being a vigilante. Can't really answer with 'oh, I got punched by a guy at night because I'm a part-time vigilante'. Not something I go around advertising." Eve told him.
