Nami poked at a screen while she hummed to herself on Kyne's couch. Her legs bopped up and down with her own tune and occasionally her wings stretched out for added flare. All of this largely due to her absolute boredom. Borrowed tablet games would only sate her for so long, and after two hours of doing so, she finally dropped the screen with a groan.
"KYYYNNNEEE!" she belted, but he had gone to work that morning. Her body flopped against the couch. Her tail and arms limp over the edge of the cushions. He'd been adamant that she stayed with him until Wednesday. It was Monday. There was nothing to do.
"That dumb wolf, making me stay in his dumb house, doing...dumb boring stuff," she muttered beneath her breath. Finding entertainment in a house would forever be tough. How people lived on the mainland was beyond her.
Her eyes trailed to the coffee table where she had a new cellphone, one he purchased for her. She felt bad at first, until she saw how cheap it was. A flip phone, and surprisingly waterproof. Something she probably should have had sooner. She reached out, took it up and flipped it open. Nami had used phones multiple times due to her friends, so luckily she had a fair understanding on what to do.
She moved to her messages and tapped her claw over and over against the display. She knew her friends' numbers. A lot had happened to Nami in a short time, they'd appreciate an update. They'd probably all be impressed that she had a phone at all. As for everything else that had happened to her, she imagined they'd have mix feelings over it. She could leave out the details of being captured and that she is currently participating in a tradition between dragons. It would be wise for her to just lie and say that she is currently courting someone. There lied the issue though, she didn't want to lie or withhold the truth.
With a sigh, the orcadragon went from making a message to going to an already started conversation that she had with Kyne. All it said was, "This is my number." Something he sent so she could easily reach him.
Her thumb hovered there. He shouldn't be messaging her while he was at work and she probably shouldn't bother him. She shouldn't, but she went on to sate her boredom.
Nami: Your life seems boring. -12:32 PM
Kyne: Excuse you? -12:50 PM
Nami: What do you mainlanders do for fun? Homes are boring -12:52 PM
Kyne: So because my home has a wooden ceiling rather than a stone one, my life equates to be boring? hah -1:00 PM
Nami: Definitely -1:00 PM
Kyne: I have a kitchen. Tablet. TV. Books. Kitchen. Beds and couches. I have more things in my home than your den. -1:09 PM
Nami: I can't swim in your bath. Also you said kitchen twice. -1:10 PM
Kyne: You're not wrong there. -1:15 PM
Nami: I can't venture outside right now, even if I could, there isn't anywhere near I want to go. -1:17 PM
Kyne: Why not? If it wasn't for those guys searching for you, there would be plenty of parks and places you could go check out. -1:20 PM
Nami: Those aren't fun. Maybe an occasional movie. But you can't go on adventures in a park. You can't even climb the side of a building without someone freaking out. -1:22 PM
Kyne: I guess if you put it that way, then yeah. If we ever get a chance, we can go find some place else to roam that isn't a busy city. -1:30 PM
Nami thumbs slid along the buttons of the phone until they stopped on either side of it and pressed inwards. She read and reread his last message, and eventually breathed out, "We..." Air held in her mouth for a moment before she gradually blew it out. He planned to win and joint own her territory. It appeared that part of that ownership meant still being around each other, but she wondered as what.
Her thumbs tapped out: What is our relationship?
She stopped there for a few heartbeats. Digits rubbing the backside of the phone and kept nowhere near the button to send the message. Nami had no plans to send it. Seeing it there, written, made her think. What did she want it to be?
With furious taps, she deleted the message.
Nami: Where I live, things are always changing. Things move beneath the water and among the trees. Things feel stagnant on the Mainland. -2:00 PM
Kyne: Sometimes things aren't enough for me on the mainland too. - 2:34 PM
Kyne sighed and leaned back in his desk chair. It'd been a busy day for him at least. He'd been traveling all over the city and had just returned to the office when Nami messaged him. He needed a lunch, a break, and something to do. The wolf found her first message already quite amusing, but he hadn't planned on the conversation leading to him into this state of mind. Bittersweet. There were things he loved about where he lived, but her words rang far too true for him.
His phone beamed still as he waited for her response. Once it hit 3 o'clock, he figured he should get back to work. He kept at it for thirty minutes before checking his phone again. Nothing. Another thirty minutes, and she was still silent. A short, grumble pattered out of him. When it hit a quarter before he'd be off, he messaged her again:
Kyne: I'm going to run by the store for dinner, what do you want. -4:45 PM
He packed up his things, kept his phone out as the last thing to put away, checked one more time, and left. Despite him not yet hearing a response from Nami, he drove to the store.
Kyne: At the store now. Won't be here long. You'll need to tell me what you want. -5:22 PM
He picked up food to make spaghetti. Easy to make, easy to eat, overall most people loved the stuff. Seeing as she still hadn't said anything to him, he decided to spend a little longer in the store to give her chance, and chose to pick up food for tomorrow too. Still silence.
A tad disappointed, but even more so confused, the wolf checked out and went to return back home. "Maybe we should do something fun tonight," he muttered to himself while he drove. "She's probably never been hunkered in a house all day before." Kyne took a turn and straightened his arms, pushing his back against the chair. "She's confusing."
His blinker ticked off as he made another turn onto his street. His heart raced as he drove down it as he mulled over if he should bring up the texts at all. With his mind overthinking everything now, he even wondered if he should have chosen a dinner at all with her not responding. Perhaps she'd just been looking through his current food so she knew what he already had. Maybe she was...
Kyne's heart went from rapid to still for the merest moment as he pulled into his driveway. "What?" he whispered and stumbled out of his car, leaving the groceries inside. "Nami!" he yelled this time and ran to the door where he found it off its hinges and on the ground. "Nami!" He sprinted in, racing through it. Every room, every closet, even the pantry. She was nowhere. When he finally came to a stop, he finally saw the broken frames on the ground, the knocked over chairs, his kitchen knives littered on the ground, all of it.
He paced until his toe kicked something that skidded along the ground. Nami's phone. The screen turned on, showing what she was typing:
Nami: Then come to my den often, even when you lose.
