The next matches went perfectly as they wanted, despite having Momo and his brother waving at Jun with enthusiasm all the time from the other side. However, there was one thing that bothered her. Yamazaki, Rin's friend—the one who had harassed her on their first meeting did not race in the butterfly although his specialty was butterfly as far as she knew. Not that she really cared about that big idiot but it had been bothering her mind for a while now since the guy himself kept staring at her until now.
Jun really felt like she wanted to make a hole in the ground and hide inside. But shrugging it off awkwardly, Jun crossed her arms and leaned against the rail on her side, eyes followed every movement both Haru and Makoto made. It was still mysterious of why in the world would Makoto want to race in the same heat with Haru. Was there some conflict between them that she was unaware of? But deep down, she knew she didn't have to be worried much about them since Makoto didn't seem to bear any bad intention. Though she can't say she's not curious at all.
"Was Tachibana always faster than Nanase?"
Jun watched the battle between those two with an unamused face, not even a single emotion was there. Should she show her excitement? Probably never. Makoto sure was faster than Haruka in the beginning but, it's a 200m race. One needed to pace themselves steadily to win the race, it's not about using a full power. He won't last till the end. A sigh escaped her lips as she watched him losing speed by the final turn. Haru had caught up. Her fists had clenched around her shirt unconsciously, she was feeling the frustration. But all of that disappeared once Makoto threw his head back, laughing once it ended.
"I lost!"
Jun moved her hand to her chest, feeling her heart beating faster than it should. Was she perhaps affected by his loss or his somehow charming smile? Gripping her shirt tightly in her fist, Jun felt a little bit down over his loss, no doubt, he was probably feeling it too. Makoto was so nice to her—she liked him a lot. He was a good friend, she knew she can't return his feelings. After all, she will be leaving Japan after school, no one knew about it yet although she had many times joked about it. Saying goodbye had never been easy.
The event continued with 100m freestyle and Jun turned her head to take a look at Makoto's figure running towards them. She can sense the frustration behind those eyes and for some reason, she could see sadness inside as well. "You did great, Makoto." Her lips mumbled the words and Jun stood on her toes to brush his hair aside and wipe the water droplets on his eyes, stunning the big guy greatly. His eyes followed her fingers and Makoto closed them for a while when she touched him, somehow feeling better now that he was with her.
"Thank you, Samezu—Jun."
The girl chuckled over his red steaming face. "Still can't get used to call me by name? You're so cute, Makoto."
