Will wasn’t in the kitchen. He wasn’t in the living room. For a brief moment, Mike was scared that he had left. But then he heard a small thud ring out upstairs.

When Mike opened the door to his room, Will was sitting on his bed, facing the window. His back was to Mike.

Mike stepped in and closed the door behind him, quietly enough not to wake any of his sleeping family members but loud enough to let Will know he was there.

Will’s head turned slightly and he slumped a little. When Mike climbed up on the bed to sit next to him Will’s eyes met his for half a second. “I’m sorry,” Will whispered. His eyes were wet.

Mike felt his eyebrows tilt up. “For what?” He whispered back.

Will rubbed a hand against his eyes. “I shouldn’t have taken advantage of you.”

Mike was so, so confused. If anyone had been taking advantage, it was him. “What are you talking about?”

Will exhaled through his nose. “The practice kissing, and then the… just now,” he played with his fingers in his lap. “It wasn’t right.”

Mike’s face dropped. “It wasn’t?”

A confused look. “What?”

“I– I don’t know what you’re saying, Will. You– you weren’t taking advantage of me, I was the one who suggested it. And I’m the one who…”

Will frowned. “The one who what?”

Mike paused. Was this really going to happen now? Before he could relish in the kiss they had just shared? It had to end already? But Mike knew he couldn’t draw it out any longer. The longer he kept it in, the more irrational he became.

“I kissed you, in the kitchen. And… I don’t know why you think you’re taking advantage of me when clearly I’m the one–“ he cut himself off. Why… Why would Will think that, unless…

Will’s eyes widened at the same time as Mike’s.

“Wait–“

“You–“

The both stared at each other.

Will still looked unsure. “Mike.”

He inhaled. “Will.”

“…”

“…”

Mike slumped backwards, brushing a hand through his hair as it splayed out on the bed. He’s never going to live this moment again. “I– I didn’t kiss you for practice, Will. I wanted to. Kiss you.”

Will let out a squeak that would have been a little embarrassing if Mike wasn’t utterly gone on him.

After a second of wide-eyed staring Will opened his mouth to speak. “I– me too,” he said quietly.

Mike knew his eyes were glinting, because that’s just what they did when he looked at Will, but he could only imagine how blown out his pupils looked right now. “Really?”

Will nodded mutely, eyes locked on Mike’s face.

Mike’s heart was fit to burst. He sat up again and laced his fingers through Will’s own. He felt the familiar rush of warmth to his face. “I, um. I really like you. If that wasn’t clear.”

Will’s smile just about split his face in half. “I really like you too, Mike.”

Mike breathed a sigh of relief and leaned his forehead against Will’s, laughing softly. “I can’t believe neither of us pieced it together.”

Will chuckled. “We were fully making out and I thought you were doing it as like. A bro thing.”

“A bro thing!”

Will punched his arm lightly. “Shut up! I got used to convincing myself you could never like me.”

Mike’s eyes softened. “You never had to, idiot.” He wrapped a hand around the back of Will’s neck, just for the contact.

Will raised an eyebrow. “Even when we were 14?”

“Oh, come on– wait, 14?”

“Yeah, don’t you remember–“

“Yeah, yes, and I’m sorry about that,” Mike’s gaze dropped in shame. “But– you liked me back then?”

Will’s cheeks reddened. “Oh. Uh, kinda? I was just starting to realize when I was 13, I think.”

13. Will has liked him since they were thirteen.

Mike stared at Will, who squirmed a little under the gaze. “Mike.”

“Sorry,” Mike breathed. “I just… I don’t know. I only figured out that what I was feeling wasn’t… normal best friend feelings a few weeks ago.”

Will laughed, covering his mouth. Mike rolled his eyes. “Mike, I’ve hidden this for three years and you couldn’t even hide it for three weeks?”

Mike whined, pressing his face into Will’s neck to hide. “Shut up, you know I’m a mess,” he laughed. He lifted his head out of the crook of Will’s neck to look him in the eyes. “Plus, how can you expect me to hide it when you’re so…”

Will blinked and his lip twitched up. “So?”

“So… perfect?”

If Mike had been touching Will’s face he would have felt the immediate rise in temperature. Will covered his face in his hands and rolled away from Mike. “I can’t do it, I’m sorry Mike, it’s too much, I’ll die,” he lamented.

Mike laughed at his dramatics, reaching out a hand to grasp Will’s fingers (because now that he could, he was never letting go).

“Does this mean…” Will started, looking at Mike from his fetal position on the bed. “You– we’re together?” His voice slightly high pitched towards the end, like he didn’t want to assume.

“Will, seriously? If we aren’t together after all that, I might break up with you.”

Will smiled, and Mike knew that he had the rest of their lives to look forward to.

”So… you didn’t want to date Jennifer Hayes?”

”Oh my fucking god.”
