"heavy is the head."JODIE COMER | EMPRESS ALEXANDRA
PETERHOF PALACE, RUSSIA,
1901"THE EMPRESS HAS given birth to a healthy baby girl!" A servant rejoices, jumping up and down with the cooks in the kitchen. "Two hours ago, at three o'clock!"
"I wonder what they will name her? Maybe Katrina, it is a strong name fit for a duchess!" A maid pitches in. "Very beautiful."
They all agree, chattering amongst themselves giddily. For it was a glorious day in Russia, a new baby marked hope and longevity for the royal family. Soon the whole country would be in festivity, celebrations all throughout the palace were already taking place.
Although, there was one part of the building that remained quiet and peaceful. So quiet you could hear angels whisper. Empress Alexandra was in her bed, she hadn't taken her eyes off her newborn daughter since the moment she was placed on her skin.
"You came out with such a great fuss, little one. The doctors were worried. You scared us." She whispers as the newborn wriggled around. "And now you are sleeping so peacefully, like a little bird."
The door creaks open. "I hope I'm not disturbing anything." A voice spoke softly.
The empress looks up with her big blue eyes, smiling at her husband. "No, not at all."
Gently, he joins his wife by her side on the bed. He kisses her forehead, then their newborn daughter's.
Nicholas was the emperor of Russia, a king and duke, a handsome, well educated man with dark brown hair and hazel eyes. But behind all that, those that truly knew him, knew he was just a simple devoted family man. He adored his wife more than anything, and their children were his pulse.
"You did well, Alex. You endured the most turbulent pain and gifted Russia with a beautiful duchess." Nicholas tucks his wife's blonde hair behind her ear. "I love you more than the world will ever know."
Alexandra grins. "Oh Niko, I did not know you to be this sentimental."
"What can I say, my love? We are beyond blessed." His eyes were on the little baby. "Our dear Tati will now have a sister to play with..."
It wasn't uncommon for many babies to die hours after birth, or be born sleeping forever. It was a tragedy that not even the royals of that time could escape. The empress herself had given birth to a son two years ago that appeared healthy, but died hours later. It wrecked their family. It still hurt to mention now. Therefore the birth of another child was a new light in their lives and extremely special.
