HER WHITE DRESS danced in the wind, her hair unraveling as she ran through the streets of Small Heath. Some thought they saw an angel. Some thought they saw a bride, running to freedom after a change of mind at the alter. But really, it was just a young duchess that had found out the most life altering news.
"Father?" Alena bolts into the church, looking for a priest. Any priest. Hastily, she sits in the confessional box. "I don't have a sin to confess. I just need someone to talk to."
"Well, I'm here, and so is God's presence." A priest answers from the other side.
"I think I'm with child." Alena whispers, she couldn't believe she was saying those words. "I think I'm having a baby."
"Children are a blessing from the Lord." The priest smiles. "You will be blessed."
Alena looks up. She felt terrified. She didn't know how Tommy would take it. Especially right now. They had already both agreed it wasn't the right time. "I don't know what this means for me, or my family."
"Your family?"
"Yes, I'm a lady with a title. My husband is not." Alena sighs, fidgeting with her hands. "I'm scared, Father."
"Titles, money, and status does not matter. The Lord doesn't care about that, and neither should you." The priest explains.
"He's not a very good man." Alena gulps. "Not in the eyes of others at least. He's hurt people. Cut sons. Killed fathers. But I love him. And I think, that's a betrayal to my family."
The priest sits up, intrigued at her words. "My dear, if this person is making you betray your family, then he is not good for you."
"But I love him, Father." There was a lump in her throat as she spoke. "If I died today, I'd ask God to let him through the gates."
"If that is how you feel, then this will be the first of many sins you commit for the sake of loving him."
Alena shakes her head. "I think that was the first sin. Loving him..."
"And will you repent?"
She thought about it for a moment. She thought about what the morally correct thing to do was. Life would be easier if she denounced her marriage to Tommy, went away with her family and tried to restore Russia, and be the perfect duchess everyone wanted her to be.
"No. I will not repent." She gets up, dusting her dress and walking out the church with her head held high. "I will not repent." She whispers to herself again and again like a chorus.
