The weather was relaxing, fleeting clouds sparsely decorating the vast blue canvas. The wind whispered a reminder, telling me that as long as I was in Isla Haraya, I was free from the chains of my normal life...
...I was free from the people who were breathing down my neck, who had their tight grips around my neck and wrists, who were trying to take over my life. My life.
Breathing in the clean air of this island made me feel invincible as if I could do anything I set out to do and no one could ever stop me.
Watching the sunset, that warm orange melting into the cool navy blue, reminded me that not all endings are horrible and that some are needed, necessary, and liberating.
Hearing the music made by the rustling of the trees, the whistling of the wind, and the crashing of the waves made me realize that it could either be the melody that I would dance to or the lullaby that would put me into a peaceful slumber.
And for a while, I believed all of that.
Even just for a while, I believed that maybe, just maybe, I could have the life that I wanted.
But then life intervened, whispering my name as if to wake me from my slumber.
"Maria."
