A soft knock on the opened wooden door catches the attention of many not so friendly looking fellas. As my eyes run through the cautious figures, I try to pay them no mind. Even as their cold gazes stared daggers at my dark cape that hid away my silhouette, I couldn't say I felt scared.
The smell in the air was familiar, bearing hints of a known cologne which confirmed my guess that, indeed, I was in the right place. And so I make my way to the reception desk of the inn, taking a seat at the bar right beside it.
"Oh my," an elderly woman's voice finally greets my presence. Scanning through her humble outfit I smile under the dark scarf, wrapped around to hide the bottom half of my face. A dark green coloured dress and a white apron hugs her curvy figure; her dark hair with a hint of white braided into a delicate bun - it was very similar to how I had pictured her in my head. "And who may you be?"
Hearing a couple of chairs screech I do not move an inch, even as some silhouettes grow weary. Some guests must be getting protective. But who wouldn't, honestly, when an unknown person just barges in without an introduction.
"My Love, how many times do I have to tell you to not meet first time guests?" Finally, a familiar voice fills the room. Sharing a silent banter with the woman, the man watches closely as she removes herself from the room and finally turns his attention to me. "And with who do I share the pleasure of meeting?"
It had been exactly three weeks since I had last seen that glorious white moustache, so I do not waste time, throwing him the golden coin with the guild's emblem that I was gifted before.
"Don't tell me I'm that forgettable, Raven," with a playful tone in my voice I pull down my scarf, revealing my identity.
"Lady White!" a surprised remark bursts out from behind that thick moustache and the old man's expression quickly grows warm. "What an unexpected turn of events!"
"Good to see you," clashing our hands we pull each other into an intense hug. It must've looked quite baffling, judging from the inn's customer's faces - a small figure being so friendly with the huge respected agent.
"What brings you here?" with a raise of a hand he puts all the men in the inn at ease. Lifting up the coin I had threw him, he frowns in concern. "Don't tell me you're in trouble."
"Not yet, no," I laugh, taking a seat on a stool nearby as we cosily lean on the bar. "I come here with a request for help in finding a house we could buy."
"I see you're still taking care of the children," catching the details in my wording, the man concludes. Of course, nothing slips by Raven. "Where have you been staying so far?"
"In their base where we met up first," I point behind me as if that's gonna make it clearer. "But we only have one week left before we must move, so I've been saving up. No need for a house in top shape, I picked up some skills along the way, so as long we have a roof over our heads, everything else can be improved with time."
"That can be arranged," a nod relieves my heart. I knew my gut would be right. Raven was one who I could trust.
"Dear, so who is this?" a shout from another room, the kitchen, I would guess, makes the man release a snort. It's the woman from before.
"Lady White, remember, I told ya about her!" Shouting right back, the man scratches the back of his neck. A soft rumble of chuckle echoes through the bar, as underlings notice embarrassment on their boss's face. As powerful as he was, his wife had him under her boot in a matter of a minute.
"Ah, the sweetheart who got the children out!" finally revealing herself from behind linen curtains with a grand entrance, madam of the house makes her way to me. "What a blessing to finally see you in person! Raven would not shut up about you after that mission-"
